Obtaining a Perfect Posture Lens
Is There Any Such Thing As a Perfect Posture?

Much of my understanding of posture correction has come from learning the Alexander technique. However, Alexander teachers often never used the word posture because it has negative connotations to do with a particular 'golden position' that must be held. Breaking down this false understanding of posture is a crucial step in regaining the natural poise that we used to have.
To answer the question, yes, there is such a thing as a perfect posture. But contrary to popular belief it is not a position, but a state of freedom. As far as I'm concerned, posture is the quality of movement of the human body.
Although I believe that there is such a thing as a perfect posture, obtaining one is not something that you learn, rather than something you unlearn. That it is and inconvenient truth for most people. Because it would be far easier if posture could be learned in a step by step process, like learning the piano or something.
The truth of the matter is perfect posture happens automatically and is controlled by parts of the brain that are not under conscious control. That is why a young child can have such a perfect posture before they even understand the meaning of the words perfect posture.
So How Do You Go about Obtaining a Perfect Posture?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but obtaining a perfect posture in Western society is definitely an uphill struggle. Because of the way that we live our lives bad postural habits are so easy to pick up. We spend around three quarters of our waking lives sitting in seats that only allow a limited range of movement. Until these sedentary lifestyles abandons perfect postures are going to be pretty rare in westernised civilisations.
However, if you are absolutely determined to improve your posture there are some ways to unlearn these bad habits and start taking control of the lifestyle you want to lead. I have had tremendous enjoyment and valuable learning experience from learning the Alexander technique. Although each teacher of the technique has their own individual style there is value to be had from any teacher. Having said that I would recommend that you have lessons from at least half a dozen teachers, because the chances are that one style of teaching will appeal to you far more than another.
If there is an Alexander technique training school near you, you are in the lucky position that you could be a guinea pig. Alexander technique schools often need people to practise on, and if you are looking to improve your posture it will be a valuable learning experience that you might not even have to you pay for.
