In the Beginning...
During the 50's and 60's there were only a few basic styles of motorcycles around. You could choose from a basic motorcycle with a relatively small engine, or a touring motorcycle that had a little more power and was geared for longer rides and weekend getaways. There was little thought put into creating high performance sport bikes right off the showroom floor, so if you wanted a machine to take to the track on the weekends, you would have to build it yourself or modify one of the available styles to fit your needs.
During the 70's, manufactures like Kawasaki started combining larger, higher performance engines with smaller, lighter frames. This combination gave rise to a new breed of bikes commonly known as sport bikes. The light weight and larger engines meant that users could take the bikes out to the track on the weekends and have some fun and still ride them to work during the week.
