In the Beginning...

During the 50's and 60's there were only a few basic styles of motorcycles around. You could choose from a basic motorcycle with a relatively small engine, or a touring motorcycle that had a little more power and was geared for longer rides and weekend getaways. There was little thought put into creating high performance sport bikes right off the showroom floor, so if you wanted a machine to take to the track on the weekends, you would have to build it yourself or modify one of the available styles to fit your needs.

During the 70's, manufactures like Kawasaki started combining larger, higher performance engines with smaller, lighter frames. This combination gave rise to a new breed of bikes commonly known as sport bikes. The light weight and larger engines meant that users could take the bikes out to the track on the weekends and have some fun and still ride them to work during the week.

The Transformation

1980's and Beyond

During the 80's, sport bikes began to change in shape and style. Manufacturers began adding fairings to the bikes in order to reduce the amount of aerodynamic drag. Riding positions began to shift from a standard upright position to a more tucked in position, drawing the legs closer to the body and bringing the rider down closer to the tank. All of this helped increase performance and handling and helped shape the look of the modern sport bike.

The Modern Sportbike

Performance Marvels

Today's sport bikes offer high performance and sleek styling at a very affordable price. Advancements in technology have led to the highest performance bikes available. Many sport bikes can be taken straight off the showroom floor and to the track with little or no modifications. With top speeds and handling comparable to exquisite high end sports cars and prices lower than the modern family sedan, sport bikes are a popular choice for anyone seeking high performance on a budget. Plus, there is nothing that compares to the freedom of riding a bike!
