Everyone's talking about it.
Who is to blame?
What can we do?
Okay, what can we do that WILL WORK!?
Take a look at the history of the price of a gallon of gas, some pain at the pump related humor, and share your tips for coping in a world where gasoline rules our lives.
What WON'T Work
See Snopes: No Gas
Very popular in email forwards. Sounds promising ... but everyone who participates will simply buy gas the day before or the day after.
Boycotting station "X"
See Snopes: Gas Out
Your neighborhood gas station is often locally owned and operated. You're more likely to hurt your neighbor than anyone who really makes money off your gas dollars.
Buying only a little gas at a time
See Snopes: Egg Analogy
If you honestly used less gas in a week, and that is why you only purchased a few gallons at a time, this might work. But simply buying in small portions more often won't do a thing.

Sorry, but these things are historically nothing more a feel-good gesture.

What MAY Help
Use less gas.It is simple. We waste gasoline at a disturbing rate. Those who waste the most pass the price of their selfish habits on down to the average consumer.
Combine trips whenever possible.
Schedule doctor visits, grocery shopping and other planned drives so that you can do several at once, rather than making a single trip for each errand.

WWYD?
Suppose the price of gasoline increases dramatically over the next few months. In the U.S., let's use a figure of $5 per gallon. (National average as of March 2008 was below $3.30/gal.)
Will you change your driving habits, or readjust your budget to accomodate?
What will you do?

I have to drive my kids to school everyday, but I tell ya what we don't EVER go for a drive anymore, just to get outta the house. If I can go w/o using the vehicle I DO! Looks like my horse needs to star getting more use LOL

I'll do what I have to, but I could start by driving 8-9 MPH slower; it would make a tank of gas last about 50 miles farther! That alone would probably only save me about one fill-up a month, though ... I have a long drive to work.

Cut the family budget in another area; I can't drive less!

Gas jumped here 40 cents a gallon from $3.49 to $3.89 today ... wow ... I fill up 3 times a week just to get back and forth to work.

My job requires a lot of driving, so it just looks like tough luck for me :(
BTW: My Volvo S60R only runs on premium gas, which is currently $4.09 in Bellingham.

Whiteout ... $25.42 per gallon
Scope ... $84.48 per gallon
Pepto Bismol ... $123.20 per gallon
Nyquil ... $178.13 per gallon

- Why Are Gas Prices So High ?
- Gas prices are mainly high because the price of oil is high. There's a lot of talk about price gouging, and prices go up fast and come down slowly. There's a little truth to that, but it's not the main event. Oil prices are high because World demand is up and World supply is not. OPEC is almost topped out, and holding back a bit. China and India are growing fast. Iraq oil is still down a bit, and should have gone up ...

It used to be so much fun to just "go for a drive" on the weekend and see where you ended up, it was cheap entertainment only a few years ago ... can't do that anymore. Posted May 06, 2008 |
