Here are my top tips if you want to build a pergola:
- Clarify why you want a pergola. For example is it to give some shade, as a place to relax with the family or as a garden focal point?
- Choose the location very carefully. Check the garden plot from all angles. It might be a fine opportunity to reorganize the garden plot.
- Mark out the desired pergola size. Make sure it is not too too big for the garden plot.
- Check the view from all overlooking windows. Still happy with the position?
- Check there are no underground utilities.
- A few building tasks require an additional pair of hands. Check someone is willing to help.
- Only use treated wood. Pine is inexpensive. Western Redwood or Cedar are good choices.
