Pergola Plan Advice

Trying to Decide on a Plan for your Pergola?

How to Make Your Own Pergola Here

If you're an avid outdoorsy and nature person, you have probably heard of a pergola. You might even have one that is located in your backyard. Let's say you're not an outdoors type person and you're not into outdoors decorating; problem solved. A pergola is an Italian garden feature. The term means projecting eave in Italian. The pergola forms a shaded walkway supported by cross beams and open lattice. Usually the pergola is decorated with colorful flowers and vines grow along the lattice. A pergola provides a quiet and serene place to enjoy the weather, relax for a day, or just to get away from life for a while.

If you decide that you want to add a pergola to your outdoor patio area, there are many things you have to choose from. The most important is deciding if you have enough room for a pergola. If you have a large backyard you probably do not have to worry about this. If your backyard is medium or small in size, you have to figure out what sized pergola would best fit your backyard. You don't want the pergola to take up all of your lawn. It is meant to be an accent to an existing patio setting.

Once you have decided that your property is suitable for a pergola, you have many choices to decide from. You have to choose if you want your pergola to be attached to your home or freestanding. An attached pergola is usually sturdier but a freestanding pergola is also a great choice. One thing you have to pick from is whether you want the pergola to be made of natural timber or wood. You can also choose from plastic, vinyl, and different types of metal. According to professionals, the natural timber pergola will fit right into a house décor that is more traditional. If your home is older or the décor of the house, both interior and exterior is traditional, your best choice would be a natural timber pergola. If you have a more modern décor, a wood composite is best for you. They are less costly and will require less maintenance in the long run. Present day wood pergolas are very identical to natural timber. Another thing that needs to be considered is if you want to grow plants on your pergola. Most pergolas are covered with vines or shrubs. The heavier the plant, the heavier and sturdier your pergola needs to be. Depending on the size of your pergola, you might even want to add outdoor furniture to it. Besides being a beautiful addition, put use to your pergola! You can add a table, chairs, and maybe even an outdoor swing.

Whether you're an outdoorsy person or not a pergola is a great addition to your home that provides a sense of beauty and color. When deciding on the best pergola for you, it all depends on what you want. Choosing which pergola for you also relies on what you plan to use it for and what types of plants, if any, you want growing around or on the pergola. If you want to do simple lightweight vines, you don't have to worry much. If you plan to have heavier plants and flowers, you might need to invest in a trellis. A trellis is just another structure that further supports the pergola.
