Pericles

Pericles (c. 490-429 B.C.) was a great Athenian ruler and orator. Under his administration Athens rose to the pinnacle of its greatness.

Pericles was also an able general and a sponsor of art and literature. Some of the giants of ancient Greek literature (such as Herodotus and Sophocles) were among his friends.

Heroes

"The whole earth is the tomb of heroic men and their story is not given only on stone over their clay but abides everywhere without visible symbol woven into the stuff of other men's lives."

-- Pericles

"This book is a lively and thoughtful chronicle of the years leading up to and into the great war between the Athenians and Spartans. Pericles is cast as the tragic hero whose flaw is the very rationality with which he so skillfully guided the Athenians and forged an empire. Contrary to the charges of both ancient and modern critics, Kagan argues that the democracy was a rational, deliberate, and moderate regime, and Pericles is portrayed as the consummate visionary political leader whose great mistake was to expect everyone to think and behave as rationally as he did."

Our Values

"Our love of what is beautiful does not lead to extravagance; our love of the things of the mind does not make us soft. We regard wealth as something to be properly used, rather than as something to boast about. As for poverty, no one need be ashamed to admit it, the real shame is in not taking practical measures to escape from it."

-- Pericles, quoted in Thucydides, 2.40

The Bravest

"But the bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it."

-- Funeral Oration of Pericles, as quoted in History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides
