Discover the Roots of European Art

With this lens I lead you through the art periods of the Middle Ages, beginning with Byzantine Art (the photo you see on the left side is an example of the art of that period).

You will also get an impression of Viking Art - art produced by a tribe which is known more for pillaging and killing than for its art works.

The last two periods of Medieval Art are the periods of Romanesque and Gothic art. Romanesque art for the first time in European History managed to be produced throughout Europe. Whereas Romanesque art and architecture was known by their round glass windows and thick walls, gothic style was much more elegant. Suddenly there were churches full light and colorful stained glass window.

Art and Culture in The Middle Ages

First there were the Elites

At the beginning of the medieval period, that is in the 6th century, works of art were rare and costly objects in the hands of secular elites, monasteries or major churches. Religious works of art were produced by monks.

By the end of the Middle Ages, in the 15th century, artists from the clergy were the exception, and works of art could be looked at by many people.

Byzantine Art

The Art of the Byzantine Empire

Here you can see the Rabula Gospel, a Syriac Gospel book completed in 586.

The manuscript is illuminated, with the text framed in floral and architectural motifs. The miniaturist followed the Persian tradition of ornamental design.

In the late 15th or early 16th century, the manuscript was taken by the Maronite Patriarch to the Laurentian Library in Florence, where it is today.

Viking Art

This is one richly decorated object from the Osberg ship grave. It is the ship's head post. The Osberg ship is a well-preserved ship found in Norway near the Osberg farm. Many facts make it seem possible that the ship was buried in the 9th century in a burial mound.

Later Gothic: The adoration of the magi at the Strasbourg cathedral

Gothic art developed in France out of Romanesque art in the mid-12th century, led by the concurrent development of Gothic architecture. It continued well into the 16th century, before being subsumed into Renaissance art.

Primary media in the Gothic period included sculpture, panel painting, stained glass, fresco and illuminated manuscript.

Gothic Architecture

Stained glass and flying buttresses

The video below shows some wonderful examples of Gothic church architecture. You can see that he structural parts of the building ceased to be its solid walls, and became a stone skeleton comprising clustered columns, pointed ribbed vaults and flying buttresses, accompanied with stained glass windows.

The Medieval Age is quite an inspiration, Beautiful architecture and paintings, many contemporary artists wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for the middle ages in my opinion. Lovely Lens! :)
