European Renaissance: Philosophy, Science, the Arts and Architecture

The Renaissance is a cultural European movement which began in the 14th century in Florence, Italy and ended in the 17th century. It encompasses the reformation of the church and the belief in the dignity of man; in the arts the linear perspective was developed; in science it meant the use of scientific methods. It focused on learning based on classical sources - the Greeks and the Romans which had been almost forgotten throughout the Middle Ages.

There are a few men who will be forever connected with the Renaissance: Thomas Morus in England with his famous book Utopia; the artists Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo in Florence and Filippo Brunelleschi, the Renaissance architect.

Renaissance Thinking in England: Thomas More

Utopia

Thomas More (7 February or 1478 - 6 July 1535) was a leading English renaissance humanist.

His most well-known and controversial book was Utopia, which he wrote and published in 1516.In this books he describes a state called "Utopia". In this state, with communal ownership of land, private property does not exist, men and women are educated alike, and there is almost complete religious toleration. Some take the novel's principal message to be the social need for order and discipline rather than liberty. The country of Utopia tolerates different religious practices, but does not tolerate atheists.

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, (April 15, 1452 - May 2, 1519) was an Italian polymath, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician and writer.

Leonardo da Vinci is most know for two of his paintings, the Mona Lisa and the Last supper. But he was also a scientist, an observer and an inventor. So he was fascinated by the phenomenon of flight, and conceptualised a flying machine.

Four major artists of the Italian Renaissance

This video presents Michelangelo, Raffaello, Leonardo da Vinci and Donatello as the four major artists of the Italian Renaissance together with their major works. Forget the music which accompanies the slides - I don't know how one can attribute such kind of music to the wonderful photos.

Renaissance Architecture

Filippo Brunelleschi

Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 - April 15, 1446) was one of the foremost architects and engineers of the Italian Renaissance. He built the Dome of Florence, Santa Maria del Fiore in commission of the wool merchants' guild.

Brunelleschi used more than 4 million bricks in the construction of the dome. Thus he invented a new hoisting machine for raising the masonry needed for the dome. He also issued one of the first patents for the hoist in an attempt to prevent theft of his ideas. Brunelleschi was granted the first modern patent for his invention of a river transport vessel.

Hi Ulla, I am amazed with your lens work. I like the topic of this lens a lot....
One of my favorite books is the all time classic "The civilization of the renaissance in Italy by Jacob Burckhardt" which contains so many thrilling stories about these crazy infights between the local powers.
