Some Info

History

Tattos are a way of self expression,

of telling our story,

of showing the world who we are.

Growing up I remember sitting on my fathers lap and playing "coloring in" with his many tattoos.
He is a sailor and has tattoos from al over the world, my favorite being Andy Cap on the one arm and Flo (his wife) looking very peeved on the other!

My Mom has a red rose on her posterior and when asked what it was (when I was about 3) told me that it was her birthmark that she just had colored in!!

So started my love for tattoos, I got my first one illegally at 14 and now am starting the process all over again by covering all the trash I had done in my younger and sillier days!
The most important thing about getting a tattoo is to remember that no matter how excited or eager you are about your ink

*GETTING THE INK IS THE LAST STEP IN A LONG LONG PROCESS*
(I'll be saying this a lot )

If you are looking to coverup a tattoo read through this first and then click on the link.
Tattoos have gone through a lot of different stages in the past millennia; tribes used tattoos to show where they come from, who they were allied with and even the stories of their lives or the lives of their families and ancestors

Getting a tattoo was also a mark of becoming a man, reaching a mile stone, or information. A woman's coming of age was celebrated with getting a tattoo on her face in some old traditions from Africa.

In later years getting a tattoo was the mark of a criminal. They were also used to ally the wearer with gangs or let people know what they were in prison for, and how long they had been sentenced for. For every tear drop tattooed on the face, the wearer had been sentenced for ten years.

Sailors used tattoos as good luck charms and even as C.V's. Getting a swallow tattoo usually meant that the wearer had sailed 5000 nautical miles, or that he had crossed the Atlantic, a sailor with two or more swallows was seen to be a first rate shipmate, as he had a lot of experience sailing the seven seas.

Tribal tattoos and scarification have been used for millennia, the word "tattoo" is said to come form the Polynesian word "tatao", which means "to tap". The Tahitian word "tatu" which means to mark something, is also a close contender to where the word comes from. Traditional tribal tattoos from Hawaii, Samoa and other tribes are becoming more popular as well.

Old school sailor tattoos are making huge comeback today, even "Rockabilly" tattoos, done in almost a cartoonish, old school style have come back into fashion. Getting an old school "Sailor Jerry" tattoo has also become a popular way of getting a tattoo as a tribute to family, friends and places.

Chinese words, phrases and names are also very popular, as are Kanji, symbols and traditional tattoos from all over Asia. There are a myriad of different forms that they can come in and can look very classy if placement is thought out before hand.

Steps to getting your tattoo

The design
So you have decided you are ready to make the commitment of permanent ink on your body. First of all you need to decide on a design that you are going to feel comfortable with for the rest of your life. Things like the logo from your favorite punk band, or LEGALIZE MARIJUANA in bold old English script, might not be such a good idea in a few years time when you have to explain it to the kids.

For your first tattoo try to choose a design that defines who you are as a person, but at the same time you will be happy to wear for the rest of your life. Obviously the size is a relative fact, whether you decide to get a tiny star on your ankle or a full Japanese body suit, it is still something that you have to absolutely love and unless it is on your back%u2026.something you will WANT to look at every day for the rest of your life.

The placement
Now you have to decide where you are going to want it on your body. Tattoos, like art should accentuate the good parts of your body, flow with the lines of your muscles and the curve of your body. A misplaced tattoo can look very awkward and that is the last thing you want to end up with!
Think of what you want your tattoo to say about you. Do you want it visible to the world or do you want to be able to hide it when the occasion demands? Do you want to hide it when you go to work and be able to show it off on weekends, when you change into your "weekend warrior" gear or do you have the freedom to place it anywhere you want?
If it is not a very large tattoo I suggest you put it somewhere where you can see it whenever you want to. The disadvantage of having a tattoo on your back is that you forget about it most of the time, as you don't see it on a regular basis.
See your new tattoo as decoration (that is what it is after all) and so work with your body with the placement of the tattoo, paint it on yourself, use Photoshop, do you what you must till you get the perfect positioning.

The artist
Here we get to the most important part of getting your new tattoo. Researching your artist is a MUST. Go to the all the shops close to you and ask to see the different artists portfolios and take a long look at not just the pictures but the standard of work that they are doing. Take note of the line work and the shading, and ask if they have any pictures of the tattoos after they have healed.
It is very important to find the right artist, your tattoo is going to be on you for the rest of your life, and you don't want to make a mistake at the crucial time of getting inked.

Once you have found your artist and are happy with the work he / she does, go and get into the chair. Don't let the artist talk you into anything that you don't want done, not that any artist worth his salt would actually try and do! After they have put the stensil on your skin, go and have a long look in the mirror, make sure it is exactly where you want it to be. Then go and get inked!!

Hope that this info helped you a little, coming soon ill have my lenses up about coverup tattoos (witch I have more than enough experience on) and tattoo after care.
