Permission Based Email Marketing

A permission email marketing campaign is probably the single biggest asset your business could create.

You already know this, as proven by the fact that you are here, reading this now. But just in case you still need to convince your boss of the benefits of permission based email marketing, I'm going to cover the whole subject from start to finish, hopefully filling any blanks you may have as well as suggesting the methods I have found to work best for me over the years.

Most businesses, both offline and on the Internet, spend all their time, effort and marketing budget on chasing new customers. Then once they make the sale, they happily wave goodbye as the customer sails into the sunset!

As proven by the meteoric rise in social media and Facebook Marketing by small business, smart marketers know that the real money is in building life-long relationships with their satisfied customers, maintaining regular contact so that they can sell to them over and over again.

Once you truly appreciate the lifetime value of a customer your business will soar to a whole new level. And the easiest and most cost effective way to manage this customer relationship is with the power of the humble email autoresponder.

So why Permission Based Email Marketing?

It is widely accepted that it costs around seven times as much to aquire a new customer than it costs to sell to an existing one. This is because your business has to overcome the initial mistrust that any potential new customer has.

By using email marketing to keep in touch with your client base you are leaving the door open for that holy grail of all businesses - repeat sales.

See, once a business appreciates the lifetime value of a customer they are able to leverage that relationship from a simple hard sell one time purchase to a full blooded business relationship that is of as much benefit to the customer as it is to your company.

Which brings in even more customers via referral or personal recommendation.

One of the best ways to build and maintain trust is with regular contact. With THEIR permission, of course. And the reason that permission based email marketing is so powerful is because it is your customer who holds the controls.

With opt in email they give the permission and they can take it away. Now while this may sound a bit alarming to most businesses, it actually encourages your customers to become more receptive to your follow up emails. After all, they can always unsubscribe, right?

Once you gain their trust you keep the relationship going by staying in touch with them via email. Don't underestimate the power of this - tapping into the lifetime value of a customer is surely the quickest and by far the most cost effective way to explode your profits for little more than a small investment of your time. Far, far cheaper than conventional bulk mailings via snail mail.

But Why Email?

Whether you run a regular 'bricks and mortar' store offline or an Internet business online, building an email list is probably the most valuable asset your business could have.

Email is a cheap and effective way to keep in regular contact with your customers while building 'Top of Mind Awareness' as you continue to grow your corporate brand. The humble email is one of the most widely used marketing tools available to the small business, and for good reason.
  • Email Is Quantifiable.
Email can be accurately tracked, with conversion rates easily measured and recorded.
  • Email Is Cost Effective.
Very cheap compared to traditional direct mail.
  • Email Is Highly Targeted.
Because your email recipients have requested your message, they are likely to be more receptive to the offers you make to them.
  • Email Can Be Personalized.
With modern tools such as sequential autoresponders, it is possible to personalize every email so that it speaks directly to each individual reader...and I'm not just talking about inserting their first name into every sentence.

All About Autoresponders

A sequential autoresponder is an essential tool in your email marketing arsenal, sending out a prewritten series of messages at specific predetermined times in order to build a relationship with customers or potential clients, in response to an initial enquiry or sale.

This has a number of very obvious advantages:
  • It allows you to build brand awareness in the mind of your customer.
  • It gives you the chance to demonstrate your expertise in a non-threatening way.
  • It lets the customer get to know you while still maintaining control over the relationship.
  • Regular contact with a customer 'keeps the door open' for further sales in the future.
  • Newsletter distribution is handled by the software, leaving you free to focus on more pressing tasks.
  • Ad tracking features built in to the autoresponder service lets you know just what is being looked at or clicked on. This lets you fine tune your offers for maximum response and higher profit.
But it gets even better...

See, with a good sequential autoresponder you can send out broadcast emails to your list at any time. You could let your customers know about your latest stock clearance sale. Or perhaps you want to drum up business during a quiet spell so you send out a broadcast email containing a 50% off coupon, valid for today only.

Can you see the possibilities for your particular business? With an email list you can create business almost on demand, simply by crafting a message and clicking a button. No wonder so many top companies want to keep sequential autoresponders as their own secret weapon!

So it pays to use an autoresponder service that is both cost effective, yet also has the tools you need in order to maximize your ROI from your email marketing campaigns.

For this reason, I recommend Aweber. Their system provides you with extensive tracking, list segmentation and personalization tools as well as hundreds of stylish HTML email templates. They currently offer a $1 trial so you can check out their system for a full month to see if it is suitable for you. They also have a growing number of tutorial videos to guide you through each step of creating your email campaign. Visit the Aweber website and see for yourself.

Capture Subscribers

Getting permission to contact your customers, potential customers or website visitors is one of the most crucial tasks in your entire business.

Because once you have their permission, you can then work on building a relationship with them. And as long as you inform, educate or entertain your customers you also have the opportunity to slip in your sales messages.

However, if you hit them with marketing pitch after marketing pitch and they will drop you like a hot potato!

But just how DO you get their permission? In a nutshell - give them a reason! Using free downloadable PDF reports, short video clips or even good old fashioned money off coupons as bait, tell your subscribers how they can use your products or services to be:
  • More Efficient
Save someone time and they will thank you by continuing their relationship with you. And the longer they read your messages, the longer you get to sell to them.
  • More Economical
Show someone how to save money or how to earn more cash quickly and they will look forward to every email you send them.
  • Educated
We all fall into the trap of taking our skills or abilities for granted. If you know a shortcut or handy tip on how to take results to the next level then why not share it with your customers?
As a general rule, if you have something of value to offer and willing to pass it on to your customers they will reward you by handing over their contact details AND permission to use it.

Email Capture Methods

Squeeze Pages
Click for more video squeeze pagesA squeeze page is nothing more than a simple web page that contains a compelling headline written to catch your visitors attention, a few bullet points detailing the benefits of downloading your freebie, and a signup form.

A short video clip (as seen in the diagram to the right) can be used instead of pages and pages of text, but it is important that it supports the message, and not just there to provide eye candy.

Then when your potential subscribers visit the squeeze page they can either sign up to your mailing list to grab your freebie, enrol in your short tutorial...or leave.

Don't try to trap your visitors in some kind of popup hell, if they want to leave then let them go with good grace. After all, if they don't want to do business with you then nothing will persuade them otherwise.

Pop Overs
Popover scripts are easy to installIf you already have an established website that is getting visitors, another option is to have a signup form 'pop over' your existing pages, again offering your freebie in exchange for the visitors contact details.

Pop over scripts are very easy for your webmaster to install and with the right offer, can convert a large number of visitors into subscribers without inconveniencing your regular site visitors. Make sure that your popover script comes with the option to limit how often the popover appears so that your visitor only sees it once per visit.

Signup Forms
Click here for more signup formsAweber has hundreds of stylish sign-up forms that you can simply copy and paste into your web pages when you need them.

They are easy to edit and come complete with your autoresponder code built in. All you do is paste the resulting code into your own web page wherever you need the form.

With a growing number of signup form designs, you are sure to find one that fits in with your current website colors and layout.

Writing Your Email Series

Free ReportFirst off, you will need to entice your visitors to sign up to your email list. This is usually done by offering them something in return for their contact details, such as an ebook, free report or possibly a coupon or discount on products or services.

Now you need to realize that this free report must actually be worth having. A sales pitch or company brochure is not going to persuade your visitor to hand over their personal details. So make sure that the report has some 'meat' to it!

Similarly, if you are offering some kind of discount as an enticement then it must be a REAL discount! Of course FREE is often a great inducement, but can encourage hordes of freebie seekers who would take anything as long as it was free. These are not the sort of signups you really want. However, a small charge, such as 'get your first meal for a DOLLAR' often works very well while keeping the freeloaders away.

Then you will need to write your series of email messages that you plan to send to your visitor as well as a timeframe for delivery.

A great way to achieve this is to produce a short training series or mini email course that informs or teaches your visitor.

For example, if your business sells cameras you could have a 'Ten Ways To Take Great Photos' mini course, delivering a lesson each day for the next ten days. Day one could be How to avoid Red Eye, day two could be how to capture great images of your kids, while day three could be a quick lesson on how to brighten dark images using your PC...and so on.

Can you see how someone looking for their first digital camera could be interested in a mini email course like that? No need to hit them with a hard sell sales pitch, the aim here is simply to build trust and show that you are the expert in your field.

Now think about your own particular business for a moment and come up with a few ideas for a mini series that would be of interest to your potential customers.

Broadcast Emails

While most businesses would benefit greatly from simply signing up subscribers to their sequential autoresponder and sending out a newsletter on autopilot, the real money comes from the ability to send out broadcast emails to your entire subscriber base.

A broadcast email is simply a message that you send out to everyone on your list at the same time, rather than as part of your autoresponder sequence.

To make maximum profit from broadcast emails you can even split up your subscriber list so that you can target your readers more accurately.

Here's what I mean...

You run a pet store and have an email list of 400 subscribers. However, you want to clear some pet beds that have been slow to sell, so you want to make space by offering them for sale for a little over cost price.

If you captured their pet details when they signed up you can now send out emails offering dog beds to the dog owners, cat beds to the cat owners and nesting boxes to the bird owners! Your response rate will be considerably better than if you merely sent out the same offer to all.

Whatever your business, you can quickly bring in the cash with broadcast emails.

Conclusions

Do It Yourself Email Marketing is quick and easy, yet can make a massive difference to your businesses bottom line profits...as long as you have the right tools for the job, you make the right offers to your list and you actually put all this into action!

See, as with anything in life, nothing happens until you take action. And the best time to get started is right now.

So if you haven't already done so:
  • Sign up to the Aweber autoresponder service for only $1.
  • Edit and upload your squeeze page complete with a reason for visitors to sign up.
  • Draw up your series of messages or newsletters and either write them yourself or visit Fiverr.com to get someone to write them for you. Load them into your autoresponder and let them start working for you.
I promise, once you start to see results from your permission based email marketing campaigns you'll wish you had started years ago!
