So What Is Everything Perry All About?

I got to thinking about how many Perry's there might be in the world, where they live and whether they are in any way connected. And what does the word Perry actually mean?

Why was I thinking about all of this?
Because I'm one myself - Michael Perry.

Perry can be a surname or a first name. I've seen it in road and place names and it's also a drink.

What do I hope to gain from this page?
I'm not exactly sure but if it attracts a few Perry's, or people who know something about something Perry then, who knows, perhaps a long lost relative in some far distant country will pop up. Or maybe we'll discover a new way to use the world Perry, who knows.

So what's this page going to be about?
Absolutely anything to do with the word Perry. If you know about a Perry, in any sense at all, please drop the details into the Perry Guest Book at the bottom of this page. All being well I'll include this on this Squidoo lens - thanks! Of course I won't be relying only on others as a lot of the info and stuff I hope to discover myself.

This lens/page will gradually contain more and more information as the weeks tick by.

Meaning Of The Name Perry

Perry is a mainly known as a surname which comes from the Old English word pirige or pyrige, meaning pear tree. It literally means a dweller by the pear-tree.

In Wales the name originates from the word Herry which means the son of Henry.

Another suggested meaning is possibly from the old French words of perrier or perrieur for quarry. In this case it would be someone who worked in a quarry or who lived in a rocky location.

Over the years there have been various other spellings including: Pery, Perrie, Pirie, Pirrie, Pury; Purry, Pery, Peri. Perri. And even a few with a bit added on such as Peryman, Perryman, Periman, Perriman and Perriment.

Some Of The First People Named Perry

Early records of the name mention:

  • Henry de Pieri of the County of Kent in 1176.

  • Walter atte-pyrie of the County of Oxfordshire in was documented in the year 1273.

  • Roger de la Peyre of the County of Cambridgeshire in 1300.

  • Edward de Pery of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379.

  • Richard de la Pirie of the County of Oxfordshire in 1488.

  • Daniel Perry and Elizabeth Pye were married in London in 1619.

  • Thomas, son of William Perry, was baptised at St. Peter, Cornhill, London in 1644.
Generally speaking surnames did not develop until the 13th and 14th centuries. Earlier than this people only had their first names only but by the 15th century most people in Europe had acquired a surname as well.

Perry Family Crest Or Coat Of Arms

There are several variations of the Perry Coat of Arms but they seem to all agree on the motto which is Recte agens confido.

The translation for the motto is While acting uprightly I am confident.

Family Crests and their mottos stretch back many centuries. Heraldry symbols were first used by warriors in the 11th and 12th centuries though some will argue that the process of creating coats of arms dates back to the 8th and 9th centuries.

The very first record of the Perry Family Cresy or Coat of Arms is unfortunately unknown.

Perry - The Dictionary Definition

Perry n. Drink like cider, made from juice of pears fermented. L pirium pear.

Taken from The Concise Oxford Dictionary

Perry - The Drink

Perry is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented pear juice. It is similar to cider, in that it is made using a similar process and often has a similar alcoholic content, which can be as high as 8.5% alcohol.

Pear Cider, distinct from perry, is produced from a mixture of pear and apple juices.

Perry has been known for centuries in Britain, particularly the West Country and Wales s well as in France, France, especially Normandy and Anjou.

In the UK the most commonly used variety of perry pear is the Blakeney Red. They produce fruit that is not of eating quality, but that produces superior perry. Perry pears are higher in tannin and acid than eating or cooking pears, and are generally smaller.

Perry is traditionally a specialty of the Three Counties and Welsh Borders, as perry pears were said to only thrive 'in sight of May Hill'. Now however perry pears are also grown in other areas, in. Somerset and Norfolk for example.

The demand is there for perry but producers cannot make enough of it, as there is not enough quality fruit available. It takes only three years for a perry pear planted in the right conditions to bear fruit, but up to thirty years before it is at full maturity.
Perry is a drink rarely found in pubs.

Most CAMRA (Campaign For Real Ale) beer festivals you can usually sample a range of Perry. CAMRA run a National Cider & Perry Competition and present Gold, Silver & Bronze Awards for both cider & perry.

Perry Winkles

Fish shop in Brighton selling perriwinkles

On the sea-front, next to the pier, in Brighton UK I came across this shop selling fish and cockles, mussels and winkles - thus the name of Perry Winkles.

They have used a pun on the word perriwinkle, which is a small edible species marine gastropod - a snail like creature from the sea in other words. I remember my dad used to love these, getting the winkle out of the shell with a pin and eating them with vinegar. Not for me though being a vegetarian.

Inventions By Perry: Rubber Band

The Rubber Band Invention

So who was the great genius who invented the rubber band?

It was none other than Stephen Perry who patented the design in Australia in 1845. At the time it was designed mainly for holding letters and envelopes together and was considered to be 'an invention of great genius'.

I have read that a rubber band is also known as binder, elastic band, lackey band, laggy band, lacka band or gumband in various parts of the world.

Where would we be today without rubber bands?
