The Case of The Most Famous Fictional Lawyer

Perry Mason, the subject of over 80books, all listed here, numerous TV series, radio dramas and feature films, is easily the most famous fictional lawyer of the 20th Century. Erle Stanley Gardner brought to life the Defense Attorney in 1933 in his first Novel - The Case Of The Velvet Claws and over the next 40 years over 80 Perry Mason novels were published, a number of these posthumously after the death of the Author in 1969.

The format never varied much from Mason takes on Client accused of Murder, successfully defends client and proves Murder was committed by other character. Often with the assistance of his private detective, Paul Drake and aided by his Secretary Della Street. despite this almost clinical formula Pery Mason was tremendously popular and became an American Hero, through Novels, serialisation in Newspapers, Movies, Radio shows, before making the leap to Television in the 1950's.

Perry Mason in The Case Of The Books

All Perry Mason novels had in common that the title always began The Case of the ...

The public perception of Mason is that he abided by, and upheld the law, yet this was not the case in some of the earlier works where some evidence was manipulated. This was not something that was considered popular so in later novels he was always shown to strictly adhere to the law.

Between his creation in 1933 and the death of the author in 1969 there was a new Perry Mason novel published on average almost every 6 months. Indeed there was even material to publish another 5 further novels. The estate of Erle Stanley Gardner even granted permission to Thomas Chastain to write 2 further Perry Mason novels under license in the early in 1989 & 1990

Perry Mason Books on Amazon

The Danger Zone and Other Stories (Lost Classics)

Review - These 11 previously uncollected tales of sneaky sleuths, dashing diplomats, and chivalrous crooks will tickle Gardner's loyal fans. Churning out most of these yarns in the 1930s for pulps such as Dime Detective, Gardner gave his reed-thin characters one defining trait--such as Key-Clew Clark, a criminologist who always zeroed in on one critical clue. Then Gardner set in motion plots only Rube Goldberg (and perhaps Scooby-Doo) could love. Acting on wild-but-accurate hunches, his protagonists expose the guilty through cons so baroque--planting skunks under couches, salting crime scenes with false clues, hiring expert forgers to impersonate plaintiffs--they can be summed up only with the phrase, "It's so crazy, it just might work!" The real revelation here is 1933's "Time for Murder," in which a society swell gets the drop on a safecracker in his den. After the young bachelor orders the criminal to relieve his boredom by taking him on as an apprentice, they end up on the lam with a frightened monkey.

Raymond Burr - The Westerns

Before taking on the role of Perry Mason, Raymond Burr starred as Captain Lee Quince of the popular 50's radio Western series Fort Laramie. This show shared many of the same actors, writers, and production staff as Gunsmoke. The program emphasized realism and historical accuracy. Considered one of the greatest radio Westerns, it lasted less than a year, as Burr then took the role of Perry Mason on TV.

Perry Mason and The Case of TV Series

Over 270 Television episodes were broadcast

Between 1957 and 1966 Raymond Burr Starred in the Emmy Award winning series. The first Season has recently been released on DVD by Paramount/CBS in a 2 volume set due to the number of actual episodes in the season and the running length of each episode. Later re-runs edited the originals to suit modern running schedules as the originals were 53 minutes in length, whilst modern running schedules only allow 43 minutes. Also most modern series usually have a maximum of 22 episodes, whilst early Perry Mason seasons had almost double this amount at 39 episodes. Only one episode was filmed in colour in 1966.

In 1973 an attempt was made to revive the show with the broadcast of The New Perry Mason, starring Monte Markham in the lead role. This adaption was not a success and only lasted one season.

1985 saw the NBC network bring Perry Mason back with a new series of TV Movies starring Raymond Burr as Perry Mason

Due for release August 19, 2008

Perry Mason: Season 3, Vol. 1

Amazon Price: $34.99 (as of 07/26/2008)

Slightly controversial release of this box set, is not slowing the preorders on amazon at all. Why the controversy? Well the first season was 39 episodes so splitting it was justified, this season is only 26 episodes so splitting it into 2 volume is being seen as a bit exploitative, especially considering the price tag! Though amazon are offering a nice discount on pre-orders and never expect to pay full price for this, it will be 50% discount within a few months.

The Perry Mason Video Game

The Case of the Mandarin Murders

In 1985 Telarium released a Perry Mason Mystery Game for the Apple II & Commodore 64. It was an interactive text adventure with graphics. Very much influenced by whodunnit type games from Infocom.

Description from the packaging:

And what a case it is. Because barely 12 hours later, Victor Kapp is dead- murdered. Laura is in jail, charged with his death. And facing trial very, very soon.

Only she swears she didn't do it. And you think she might be right.

You'll have to work fast- and smart. Dig into people's lives. Like Russell Miller, the food critic whose career was ruined when he gave Victor's restaurant a bad review. Margot Duboq, Kapp's chef and the secret of his success- she seems to have a secret of her own. And the Masters couple, Julian and Suzanne, he a bitter partner of Kapp's, she a reputedly very close friend.

You'll have help: the savvy Della Street- your secretary- and the wily detective Paul Drake. And if you're good, you'll convince the jury that your client isn't the killer. If you're very good (after all, you are Perry Mason), the real murderer will break down and confess- but only after you've figured out the true, twisted story.

Of course, for a person of your talents, it ought to be just another day at the office...

Perry Mason: The Case of the Mandarin Murder is the first interactive mystery to use the world-famous criminal lawyer created by Erle Stanley Gardner. It also represents a major breakthrough in interactive fiction: the cooperation of the characters and jury changes as a direct result of your interactions with them. In addition, you can do virtually everything a courtroom lawyer can do, from cross-examining and introducing evidence to consulting privately with the judge.

The mystery adventure Perry Mason: The Case of the Mandarin Murder was written in SAL by Telarium Corp.

Thanks to Seth Godin for drawing this to my attention!
