Persia and the Persian Empires

Persia was a great civilization that occupied the area now known as Iran.

Persia was the scene of a series of three empires that lasted for almost a thousand years:

-- the Achaemenid Dynsasty (559-331 BC): ruled by Cyrus the Great, the first "King of Kings", and Darius the Great who founded the magnificent city of Persepolis, and and Xerxes I (who completed Persepolis)

-- the Parthian Dynsasty (239-227 BC): this dynasty arose after about a hundred years of Greek rule

-- the Sassanian Dynasty (227-652 AD), renowned for its warrior kings and its wonderful art.

Two important important religious prophets came from Persia, Zoraster and Mani. Zoraster (c. 620-551) taught that life was an eternal stuggle between good and evil. He founded the religion of Zorastrianism, which became the state religion for many hundreds of years.

The Influence of the Persian King, Cyrus the Great

"The figure of Cyrus has survived throughout history as more than a great man who founded an empire. He became the epitome of the great qualities expected of a ruler in antiquity, and he assumed heroic features as a conqueror who was tolerant and magnanimous as well as brave and daring. His personality as seen by the Greeks influenced them and Alexander the Great, and, as the tradition was transmitted by the Romans, may be considered to influence our thinking even now."

-- Richard Nelson Frye
