The persimmon is a delicious, sweet, exotic fruit. It is found in most countries today, at least in the supermarkets. Let's have a look at where it grows and how to eat it. Maybe you would like to try Sharon fruit gratin, as on the picture?

Fruit of the Gods

The persimmon originated in China, but was brought to the United States and Europe already in the 1800s. There are many different kinds and varieties. Basically there are two main kinds- astringent and non-astringent. The astringent kind must be soft and ripe before you eat it, while the non-astringent kind can be eaten when crisp as an apple.
The word persimmon is derived from putchamin, pasiminan, or pessamin, from Powhatan, an Algonquian language (related to Blackfoot, Cree and Mohican) of the eastern United States, meaning "a dry fruit".
It is also interesting to note that the persimmon is of the Diospyros-genus, which in Greek means "fruit of the gods".

Apart from being very tasty, persimmons are also good for you. They contain anti-oxidants, which are good to protect the body against infections. In addition they are said to contain the important anti-tumor compound called betulinic acid.
Rich in vitamins A and C, as well as beta-carotene, it also provides B-complex vitamins. And, if that is not enough, you also get minerals by eating this fruit. Baked Persimmon

This is not exactly the same as on the picture in the introduction, but very tasty too. For this recipe it is best to use the non-astringent type, as they have a firmer flesh and will not collapse when heated.
Basically, these are filled persimmon baked in the oven. Absolutely delicious, especially when served with some whipped cream or ice-cream.

Ingredients

4 persimmons
50 g mixed nuts
3 tsp honey
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger

Instructions

Mix the nuts with honey and spice. If the honey is hard, you can add a little bit of hot water to loosen it up. Cut off the top part of the persimmon, like a lid.Remove some of the fruit, and fill the hole with the nut-mixture. Bake in a pre-heated oven, 200 degrees, for about 30 minutes or until soft. Let them cool a little before serving. Enjoy!

As a country boy, we had small ones that grew wild, then we went to Korea and they were huge and came in hard and soft varieties. I loved them. THanks for sharing here!
