Invitation:
Definition: A document written or printed, or spoken words, conveying the message by which one is invited.
There are many forms of invitation to many different occasions. This lens deals with some of those occasions
Baby Shower
Many people choose to have baby showers for both parents, and some people have a men-only shower. In Jewish tradition and Ethiopian tradition, a celebration and gift reception is held only after the birth of a child.
Traditionally, baby showers were given only for the family's first child, but over time, it has become more common to hold them for subsequent or adopted children. Even when a shower is held for only the first child, it is not uncommon for a parent to have more than one baby shower, such as one with friends and another with co-workers.
While there are no established guidelines for what constitutes a baby shower, there are some traditional activities that are common at baby showers. Traditionally, the shower is given for the expected parent(s) by someone else as opposed to the parent(s). Usually, the mother's maid of honour or bridesmaids at her wedding hosts this final event into motherhood. There are favours, gifts, and games that are all coordinated by the host(s). Invitations are sent out, by the organizers, on behalf of the Mother/Parents, which is just like at a traditional bridal shower. Because the party centers on gift-giving, the baby shower is generally arranged by a close friend.
There is no set rule for when or where showers are to be held, and the party can thus be held at a variety of places and at various times. It is common for the host to provide baby-themed games during the shower. In some regions, it is common to give party favours, which are small gifts for the guests. Typically, newborn-related gifts are purchased for the new mother-to-be. Anything from diapers, bottles, rags, clothes and toys are acceptable and common gifts.
There is great variance in practices and themes of baby showers. Some people prefer to hold showers after the birth of the baby. In this case there may be a tendency for the baby shower to be less focused on the baby and more on the mother and the mother's preparation for the new baby. Some people believe that giving gifts before the baby is born can bring bad luck. Others believe that the concept of celebrating a coming child is a private family event or does not mandate a party at all.

Birthday Party
In Western cultures, particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, birthday parties are often accompanied by colorful decorations, such as balloons and streamers. A birthday cake is often served with candles that are to be blown out after a "birthday wish" has been made. The birthday boy/girl gets the first piece of cake. While the birthday cake is being brought to the table, the song Happy Birthday to You is sung by the guests. Event management agencies and professional party services are being utilized increasingly to organize birthday parties.
A child's birthday party may be held at his/her home or in a public place. Soft drinks are often served alongside water and both sweet and savory foods. In many cultures, a birthday cake is served. Birthday parties for children often feature entertainment, party games and goody bags. Adults' birthday parties in Western countries are often held in restaurants, bars or nightclubs. In some cultures, guests are expected to bring birthday gifts.
There are a wide range of gifts given at birthday parties. For kids, toys like barbies, action figures, and stuffed animals are popular. For teens and adults, in addition to more personalized gifts, gift cards to his/her favorite store are also popular. Some people opt to have gifts given to others in donation, instead of accepting gifts for themselves. For children, popular benefiting charities are animal shelters and rescue houses. For adults, political or social causes may be chosen more often.

Wedding Invitations
Traditionally, wedding invitations are mailed in double envelopes. The inner envelope may be lined, is not gummed, and fits into the outer envelope. The outer envelope is gummed for sealing and addressing. However more recently, the inner envelope is often left out in the interest of saving money and postage. Traditionally, the mother of the bride addresses the wedding invitations. However, if she chooses not to, the mother of the bride may outsource this responsibility to a professional calligrapher or a friend with good penmanship. With computer technology, some are able to print directly on envelopes from a guest list using a mail merge with word processing and spreadsheet software.
