Maybe Your Door Mat Is More Than a Dirt Catcher

Door mats or welcome mats have been around for a long time. They were designed to catch dirt and debris from the shoes and boots of your guests before they entered. They've also served as a greeting to all those who come to your door.

But whether your door mat is used indoors or outdoors, it can also express more. It can express something about the character and spirit of the individuals in your household or merely compliment the design of your home. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase or create personalized door mats. A stately door mat with your monogram, a holiday greeting with your names or photos on the mat, or some other expression of who you are are all possibilities. We have a wide variety of options on this page, as well as some tips for making your own personalized door mat if you don't find a look that suits you.

About Your Personalized Door Mat

All of the door mats or welcome mats listed below indicate they are for indoor or outdoor use. Some of course are more durable and will withstand more traffic and harsh weather than others.

The first offerings are colorful fabric designs with elaborate images. They can help create a festive image for the holidays or express personality. In general they have a rubber backing to prevent skids and have a commercial grade polyester fabric as the cover.

On the latter half of the page are the more durable coco/coir fiber mats, rubber, and heavy duty recycled/cast aluminum with a variety of finishes.

Your personal style and the type of use should determine which mat is the best choice.

Creating Your Own Personalized Door Mat

If you don't find the door mat design that suits your needs, you can of course make your own. It's as simple as purchasing a plain mat, applying some stencils with tape to the clean mat, and painting.

Stencil paint works well if you want to be more creative and colorful with your design. You can use a sponge to apply it. For something more basic, you can spray paint over the stencils that you buy or make yourself. A protective polyurethane coat is a good idea once the mat has dried.

There is a video below that can help you see the basics of this process. A mat with a lower pile and uniform texture makes this an easier task.

I guess I can blame it on moving... but I really do need to put down a Christmasy kind of doormat. I have a lot of doors with this new house so this could be fun! One of these days I will get around to putting up the tree! Just not enough hours in the day it seems, but a mat I think I can pull off! Thanks for the reminder! :)
