Perth is Australia's best kept secret and June Clever-esque city of the West. Plus, being the most isolated city in the world has gotta mean something...  The 'big smoke' of WA has everything to offer the average tourist, renegade traveller and like me, immigrant savant.

Transportation

Sure you could walk... but do you really want to?

Perth has an excellent transportation system. From North to South and everything in between you can get their by car/bus, by rail, by bike, or even by sea. My recommendation, mix it up a bit. You can get anywhere including Fremantle, Subi, Northbridge or the city (the hot zones) with bus or train. The southern route will be here by November '06.

Go Public - Bus, Train, Ferry...
Plan your journey with Transperth, Perth's public transportation authority.

Perth's Top 5

If you've only got a few days in Perth, here's your 'not to miss' list!

1.Kings Park & Botanical Gardens

A brilliant place to lookout over the city of Perth and the Swan River, especially amidst the treetops on the new Lotterywest Federation Walkway. Great nature walks and examples of WA flora, including rare WA natives and wildflowers (in September). They even have their own Top 10.

2.Perth City
On the edge of the Swan, this picture perfect capital and hub of WA is where it's at. Easily accessed by foot, don't miss the Swan Bell Tower, the WA Art Gallery, or the night-club and alfresco dining centre of it all, Northbridge. The best way to see it all is the new double decker bus tour.

3. Fremantle
Visit historical Freo (for short) and take in the ports, prision, and pale ale. Just 20 minutes from the city, it's a vibrant port city rich in heritage buildings, maritime history and cosmopolitan culture. You'll need a full day to explore it all and relax on the cappucino stripalfresco as a night cap.

4. Perth's Beaches
Only minutes from the city, Perth's beaches are some of the best. Checkout Cottesloe, Scarborough and City Beach for starters. Don't forget to slip, slap and slop!

5. Rottnest Island
About 30 minutes off the coast (from Freo), Rottnest is Perth's own little island getaway. The native quokkas will keep you company while biking the 24km around the island, stopping at beautiful beaches on the way. Full day recommended.

About jjcartwright

I've lived in Perth for almost 3 years now, so I've seen it from the eyes
of a tourist, resident and member of the local rat race. A great place
to live and work... and truly superb for a 3.5 day break.
