I'm kind of torn on this one. There are certainly preventive measures you can take to keep pests at bay, but sometimes you HAVE to call in the big guns.
A Quick Rundown on Major Pests
It's that time of year again, and how else to better beat the heat than staying indoors? Unfortunately, this is exactly what many pests are doing as well, and that leaves you having to deal with them. Whether it's getting bit by mosquitoes near your grill or having to deal with cockroaches in your kitchen, knowing proper pest control should be a top priority. It is also important to consider organic pest control so you can keep your family safe from pests and any toxic chemicals as well. So, here are just a few safe methods that are effective for the most common summertime pests:
1. Mosquitoes- Probably the most pesky of summertime pests, these bugs love the heat and humidity. Pest control sprays and chemical deterrents work, but due to high DDT concentrations homeowners should use them sparingly. Some alternatives to sprays include using a mixture of apple cider vinegar, witch hazel and eucalyptus oil or even liquefied garlic on the skin, although this smell is unbearable to more than just mosquitoes! Your best bet would be to use Thai Lemon Grass oil, especially using the liquid from Thai Lemon stalk applied directly on skin. For an area of effect, use citronella based candles or catnip plants to deter them, or consider planting marigolds for them to feed on as an alternative to skin.
2. Ants- Stepping in ant hill is no joke, and with fire ants this is an even more painful event. For a fun way to trap ants, try mixing sugar or honey in water on a shallow plate to lure and kill them. Mix soap, water and alcohol for a lethal concoction you can use directly on these pests. Two more methods, applying borax to the mix or pouring boiling water on hills, also work although they are more dangerous. Additional methods include sprinkling cinnamon or cayenne peppers in high traffic areas, as ants hate these scents.
3. Cockroaches- Cockroaches can spread bacteria and filth around any surfaces they cover, making you or your pets vulnerable. Apply baking soda around your pets' food bowls to preven them from invading their food. For unseen infestations, place Diatomaceous earth over any traffic areas as it will kill them and don't worry, this earth is completely safe for humans and animals. If you don't have a cat, then consider placing catnip in certain areas to repel additional cockroaches, as well as bay leaves, cucumber slices, or garlic. For a fun pest control project, you could try to combine beer soaked bread with a slippery container in order to trap and kill these pests.
4. Flies- Flies carry a number of airborne diseases and can spread dangerous pathogens. To repel flies, set minty oils in a popular location or apply strategically throughout your home. Since there is not really a way to find an infestation, trapping and killing flies works the best. Try placing overripe fruit with some fruit juice in a bowl covered with plastic wrap and then pole holes just big enough. A similar concept is to have a funnel with place in a container with apple cider vinegar. Either way will trap the flies and eliminate them by drowning and can also be fun to make with the kids.
5. Bed Bugs- Nobody wants to have bugs in their beds, and as you stay in hotels throughout the vacation season, you are more likely to bring bed bugs back to your home as they thrive in warm, moist weather. This is a more serious infestation, as they can spread diseases and bite you throughout your sleep. Note that only preventive measures are possible, so spraying chemicals around the bed is ineffective and bad for your health. One thing to make sure of is to expose your mattresses to extreme cold or heat so that there is less possibility of bed bugs growing in numbers. Also, cleaning and maintaining your house is important, with an emphasis on vacuuming. Be sure to wash your sheets and clothing in hot water whenever possible, to kill possible eggs. Ultimately, if you do spot an infestation then you need to call a pest control expert to manage the problem.
Bonus: Termites! Probably the most recluse of pests, they are especially prevalent in the summer as rotting wood is more likely to form due to the heat and humidity. These pests will affect your home rather than yourself directly. As such, they can cause you thousands of dollars of property damage if ignored. Proper termite control is important, and should be employed before further damage accumulates. The only green treatments are heat treatment, using orange oil, or replacing wood with pesticide covered wood. Although, the biggest issue is finding the origin of the colony, and only a pest control specialist can successfully find and diagnose a house.
Don't let these pests bring you down this summer season, there are so many ways to fight back! If your kids are looking for things to do, try making these traps for fun as they are easy, safe and effective!

Termites, Termites, Termites
Termite control is one of the toughest cases of pest removal for homeowners. These tiny insects, similar looking to ants, can tunnel in complex colonies numbering above the thousands. Termites tunnel and burrow through structures to reach a food or water access point. This intricate process also leads to significant structural damage, including weakened foundations, damaged flooring and unsafe framing for a home. Entire crops are at risk, as termites have a voracious appetite and their extensive colony structures that can be built above and below ground. Preventing a termite colony from ever establishing roots is the best pest control measure for homeowners. The property impacted by termite damage plays a large role in determining the type of pest control and prevention techniques used. Due to termites' tunnelling skills, they can often go unnoticed for long periods of time even with detailed termite inspections.
Prevention Is the Best Policy
Termite damage is one of the most costly types of repairs a homeowner can face. Termites are highly capable of gnawing through a variety of materials including dirt, wood and carpeting. Insurance companies are hesitant of covering some houses and areas that are prone to heavy termite damage. There is no guarantee that the same home won't be affected by termites again, and also the scope of structural and foundational damage can be expensive. Some termite removal methods that a do-it-yourself homeowner may consider in preventing termite damage includes the following:
Inspect wood structures and foundation supports regularly for signs of termites. This includes garages, porches and decks. Dirt debris picked up by their tunneling efforts, as well as the insects themselves, can be seen.
Replace any timber that is coming into contact with the ground. Concrete or other masonry materials are safer from termite populations.
Keep areas around a home dry. Inspect the rainwater, gutter drains and soil touching the foundation of a home. Add sand or gravel if the ground remains saturated too long after a rainfall.
Weed and clean the garden. Termites also consume rotting vegetation in addition to wood.
Clean up after pets. Termites regularly feed on animal waste, and so cleaning your yard clean of waste is a great preventive measure.
Preventing a termite problem is a far easier form of pest control than an actual extermination process. Due to the sheer damage a termite colony can inflict, even the laziest person may be motivated enough to take action.
Bad Ideas for Termite Control
While termite prevention is the best policy for termite control, there are many bad ideas that homeowners are often given that can actually make a small problem worse.
Have a professional termite inspection before you buy a house. When homeowners receive an assessment of termite damage, they may just decide to give up because it can be overwhelming. Now you will inherit their problem. Get a complete home inspection, including a termite analysis, particularly if you are purchasing in a region prone to termite populations.
Simply using chemical sprays does not mean you are finished.A weak foundation will still receive damage if you are only spraying surface termites with toxic spray, as the tunnels and colony are where the main problem lie.
Don't think that the worst is there. Before ripping up your entire foundation and replacing it with concrete, the termite problem may not be as bad as you thought. Colonies and tunnels will sometimes be inactive. No additional damage should be incurred if there is not an active colony.
Catching a termite problem early on and implementing some additional pest control methods can be all that a homeowner needs to be protected from costly termite control damage. Do not believe that there is nothing you can do as a homeowner, as it is the homeowner that can actually do the most! There will be less work to do further on down the road if you get a handle on termite problems early.
Pest Control Information
Pest management varies depending on whether you hire a professional or do it yourself, but both will generally take the same steps in order to tackle a pest problem:
Full check-up. Any good pest management plan should start by taking the time to thoroughly evaluate the damages and vulnerability points of the home before executing extermination. A benefit of this is that you may find other undiscovered pest problem, which can alter your original pest management plan.
Anything else but chemicals. As chemicals range from mild to severe toxicity, most pest control technicians will initially use non-chemical methods and use chemicals as a last resort. Solid bait, paste, glue, and traps are viable, non-toxic options that can be used in pre-emptive attacks on pests.
Last resort. These non-spray tactics may not always work, and it is only at that point that pest exterminators will try to use spray chemicals in a detailed plan. Depending on the scope of the damage, proper protection is crucial in preserving the quality of the home. For your safety and effectiveness, cover air vents and windows while also leaving the house to avoid breathing in fumes.
Prevention. The best and most simple measure that anyone can use is to have active pest prevention. Using only a few basic techniques, you can prevent further bug problems. Daily tasks such as taking out the trash, doing the laundry, and washing the dishes can keep bugs at bay. Using post-pesticide treatments after chemicals have been sprayed is a great way of maintaining a pest free environment. Consult a pest control technician immediately if you notice major structural damage due to pests or if pesticides are having no effect.
Only pest management plans with a homeowners full consideration of risks and actions will prove to be effective. Pest management can be simple to do with a commitment to enact methods of prevention.
