Marketing For Pet Companies.
The pet industry in the UK is forever growing, with an estimated spend well into the billions, the market has boomed in recent years. Back in 2008 an estimated £4.3 billion was spent in the UK on pet purchases, pet accessories, pet training, pet products, pet clothing etc.
The UK certainly loves its pets and the most popular is the humble dog with an estimated 2 million dog owners they are close to the nations heart.
Pet companies are as such in a booming industry that is showing good growth. The only problem is competition; there are lots and lots of pet companies (from pet shops in the high street to on-line businesses) that are within the UK competition is getting more and more fierce.
Websites
The pet industry is a very old and well established industry, however many of the recent businesses are very new and as a result are very up to date with technology. Most use either website designers or have internal web staff looking after their websites. Many pet companies (especially the on-line ones) use PPC advertising campaigns and other forms of internet marketing in order to control the internet pet industry (also which is growing quickly).
Graphics
Many pet companies will use printed material (companies such as Pets at Home) will use brochure designers (unless they have design facilities in house) to produce a wide range of printed products. This would include POS display (point of sale) and banner adverts around retail shops.
Telemarketing
Telemarketing is not really an area that pet companies use.
PR
PR is used by many pet companies and there are even specialist PR agencies that work in the pet industry solely. The mainstream media does take an interest in the pet industry, but this is more from a welfare angle looking into abuse cases along with charities such as RSPCA.
Events
There are more and more exhibitions around the UK focused on the pet industry. Crufts is probably the most well known event and many pet companies will look to get involved in the marketing buzz. exhibition stand designers work with a number of pet companies for new events that crop up around the UK.
The pet industry in the UK appears to be following the trends of the US market as being a booming growth area so certainly marketing for pet companies is certainly something that pet companies are looking at more creative input for.

TV Adverts From Pet Companies
TV advertising has to be the most expensive form of marketing in the world, however pet companies advertise a lot on TV.
We have all seen the adverts for 'Felix' - because cats like Felix like Felix.
We have all seen the advertising for Pedigree on TV; pet food is big business and worth billions a year, so well worth the investment into TV advertising.
Pets are also used in TV adverts, the classic being the Dulux advert with the shaggy white dog, or the mearcat in the Confused.com adverts.
For many decades pets have been used in marketing campaigns and are likely to be for many years to come.

Pet Care
Pet care is one of the largest money spinners for pet companies; grooming for dogs, clothes for cats, socks for fish etc.
Pet marketing is big business and is similar to the after sales servicing and warranty for cars. As the pet companies have sold the pets to customers, they need to ensure that customers come back for pet care services and products.
The marketing of these can be done across many forms of media, PR, local advertising etc.

Pet Shops
The best form of marketing for pet shops is their actual shop itself. Having an inviting clean and spacious shop will encourage pet owners to come in and browse around.
Location of the pet shop is one of the most important things, a bad location can spell disaster for the pet shop as people will not visit.
Pet shops are very much in the retail industry and as such, the selling is in the shop itself. Having a good variety of pets is good as is activities for children to get involved in is also wise.

Pet Food
One big area for pet companies is the food that is sold. Dog food, cat food, exotic pet food are all big areas of business for pet companies and are a good source of revenue for pet companies.
The pet food area is the main area that pet companies use marketing for. Considering the sheer number of pet food TV adverts, marketing for pet companies is very much based around the food area rather than the pets themselves (or accessories).

Value For Money
Most businesses are looking at ways of cutting costs; and pet companies are no different.
The industry is dominated by the big names (Pets At Home etc.) with a massive number of smaller companies all fighting for market share.
Awareness is a big thing in the pet industry; if people know who you are, where you are and what you can offer, then they are more likely to come back.
With the pet world, customer loyalty plays a big role. People that visit will need to come back time and again - so efforts do need to be made to ensure that the experience is a good one so that customers will want to come back.
This all takes marketing, PR, image - which is all linked to good branding.
This is partly having a nice shop/website, helpful staff, good prices and good brand awareness. All this will cost £ and value is something that is demanded in todays climate.
