Pet Mice Are Nice! (tips for Mom & Dad)

Mice Are Great Pets!

I know, you may be thinking . . . eeeeeekkkk!

A mouse in the house!

Actually, though, mice are wonderful pets for people of all ages, including young children. Hopefully this lens can clear up some common misunderstandings about mice, so you will consider these great little friends for your next pet.

Pet mice are fun to play with.

(not like fish, for example)

I love fish. I love pet fish. Fish are great. They are fun to look at, interesting to learn about, and exciting to show your friends. However, they are just not very cuddly, are they? A pet mouse can be hand-tamed and will learn to sit in your hand, crawl along your sleeve, and hang out in your pocket. Adult mice are in general afraid of heights, which means they are not likely to try to jump off your hand or try to get away from you, as long as they are used to you and are not scared by something.

Pet mice are easy to care for.

Even the youngest children can learn to scoop up wood shavings from a glass tank and dump them in the trash can. The water bottle is easy to fill, the food is easy to scoop, and the wheel is easy to wash. Everything about mice is fun and easy, even for little kids. We got our first mice when the kids were about 3 years old and it worked out great. Fast forward to 15 years later - we still have mice!

Mice have a short life span.

(about 3 years)

Pet mice are short-lived, which can be a great benefit. Not to sound harsh, but many parents don't want to take on a dog or cat that could easily live 20 years, and I think that is a very reasonable concern. A mouse, however, will not live that long, so you can have the full cycle of enjoying the pet, and then coming to a natural conclusion of that experience, within a manageable amount of time. For example, if you get a pet mouse in 4th or 5th grade, chances are high you will no longer have a pet mouse by the time you get heavily involved with school activities in junior high and high school - it works out well for everyone.

Pet mice are affordable.

Mice are cheap to buy if you are just getting started. Prices range from $1-$3 for plain white "feeder mice" or $5 and higher for "fancy mice" that come in many pretty colors. Face facts - they are all the same mice, basically, but some are all white and others have different colors. The feeder mice are just as personable and friendly and can be hand-tamed just as well as fancy mice, so if you want cheap, just go with a feeder mouse, and that's fine, too.

Mice are affordable for ongoing maintenance costs. They don't eat much and you can supplement their diet with almost any regular "people food" that you would be buying anyway. They don't use much bedding and it does not need to be changed very often, especially if you only have a couple of mice.

Many people used to have mice. Most likely if you ask around a little bit, you can find someone who still has a tank and equipment in their garage and they will give it to you for free!

How to buy pet mice.

I would recommend purchasing your pet mice from a local source, either a reputable pet store chain in your local town, or a local friend who has a mousery for breeding or who has an accidental litter. By purchasing locally, you are supporting your local economy and you can see the quality of the breeding place in person and be sure you are getting healthy, lively, friendly mice. It is nice to be able to see them in person and pick out the exact ones you want.

Please don't get just one mouse. How sad. They are very sociable little creatures and they really want a friend, so get at least two.

Ask your pet supplier to check their status of girl or boy, and be sure you get two the same, or else you are going to have wayyyyyyyyy more baby mice than you every imagined.

Trust me on this one!

A HOUSE FOR YOUR MOUSE

You will need several items for pet mice and it is important to have your habitat ready to go, before the mice ever come to your home. I would recommend purchasing your main tank from a local supplier, because who wants to pay for shipping on something heavy like glass? Plus, it might get broken during shipping. For everything else, though, mail order is the way to go!

EXERCISE WHEELS

(A Must!)

Your mouse really must have a great place to run and play and an exercise wheel is the most basic way to meet that need. There are two main types, either "tail safe" wheels that are solid, or more traditional wire wheels that have gaps between the wires in the wheel. At our mousery, we have tried all types and they all work fine. We have never had a mouse-tail-injury. It could happen, of course, but it has not happened to us (yet).

EXERCISE BALLS

(optional)

Exercise balls are another fun toy, but beware the risk of escape! Be sure the latch is closed tightly and adult supervision is recommended at all times.

HABITAT TRAIL SYSTEM

(addictive . . . . . . keep alert!)

Many companies make different styles of habitat trails. These are super-fun, because you can watch the mice running around through them and it is quite entertaining. However, like any other ongoing product line, it's easy to get swept away in the thrill of "just one more piece" or one more link or one more curvy section or one more whatever . . . . . when will it all stop!????

I know when.

it's when a mouse chews through the trail and gets out. Suddenly things are not so fun anymore.

If you do get a trail system, be extra careful to check it every time you let the mice into it and be sure that there are no gaps where they have been chewing through it and no pieces have come loose since last time. I would not recommend leaving the trail open at all times, but rather attach it and detach it (from the main tank) now and then, so they can have some fun, but don't let them live in it full time.

FOOD

(very helpful for keeping the mice alive)

A food dish is nice. It keeps things looking official and tidy. Sure, why not get one?

However, mice don't really care about if their food is in a dish. In fact, here's what they are going to do with it - take it out of the dish right quick and haul it off and store it away somewhere in their bedding.

You can just drop a handful of food in the same corner every day and the mice will find that, too, trust me.

Nonetheless, most people do get a food dish and your local store probably has those, too, so you can pick one up when you get the tank and mouse, if you really want one.

You will need food, though, which is offered below.

WATER BOTTLES

(another must!)

Water bottles. Boring, but necessary. Keep a close eye on them and check every single day. You never know when one might spring a leak and suddenly your mouse are weak and falling over from dehydration due to lack of water.

The mice can and will store food, so they can manage a day or two without new food. They can't store water that has dripped onto the bedding, though, so they can not survive at all if your water bottle suddenly has a leak and drains out.

YOU MUST CHECK THE WATER BOTTLE EVERY DAY!

Do YOU think "Mice Are Nice", too?

Did you know you can breed mice for special colors or personality traits? You can take them to contests and tournaments. You can teach mice simple tricks (if you are VERY patient) and you can enjoy them for years to come. You can join a local mouse club in your hometown to meet new friends who share your love of these sweet little creatures.

Have fun!

I've never had mice, tho I like them. I've had rats. I love rats. The mice are similar, but the rats are bigger and easier to train and stuff. Well, easier to train. but both are gentle, fun pets. I second your warnings about escape-proofing, water bottles and making sure you know the sex of your mice. I have found that craigslist is a good place to look for mice/rats, from someone who really knows them. Pet stores often do not really know the sex, but they neglect to tell you that part. Haha! My captcha word for this comment: geektoes! Squidoo is the only place i don't mind captchas -- and here i actually enjoy them!

This brings back memories of how I purchased several mice from a local pet store when I was about 11 or 12 because a snake owner was buying them up for food. They were the cutest ever.

I'm sure kids love them, but they give me the shudders.

Never owned a mouse, probably because the wife would have shrieked the house down ;)
