Pet Food Standards And Pet Safety Depend On The FDA Establishing New Standards
A pet safety report was recently released by the Office Of Inspector General about the FDAs handling of the 2007 Pet Food Recall. This was the deadliest Pet Food Recall in history and responsible for countless deaths of cats and dogs.
The Office Of Inspector General's report shows that the FDA was lax in following their own procedures. The FDA didn't follow up to see if all contaminated pet food was removed from store shelves.
Congress passed a new bill, FDAAA, which asks for a total reform of pet food safety standards. The new standards needed to be established within two years, which runs from September 2007 to September 2009. So far the FDA has not done it.
