Choosing a Pet Sitter For Your Dog !

Be sure to visit any facility you are considering in person.

Sometimes the most difficult thing a pet owner has to deal with is leaving their beloved companion behind while going away on a trip or vacation. Who do you trust? Finding a place where you know your pet will be happy and comfortable can make the whole experience less stressful for everyone. Be sure to visit any facility you are considering in person. This is an absolute MUST! Is the place clean? How do the animals look? Are they sitting in clean or soiled cages? If you are boarding a cat make sure the cats are kept in an area that is seperate from the dogs. Do not leave your pet anywhere that does not require him to be up to date on current vaccinations, including a negative fecal check.

A lot of veterinary hospitals offer boarding services. It may surprise you though that this may not be the best place to board your pet, UNLESS they have a separate staff and facility designated for boarding. First of all, how would you feel hanging out in a human hospital for a few days? No thanks! Hospitals are just that-hospitals. Your pet is not going to have any fun staying in a veterinary hospital while you go away.

Most clinics are not setup well for boarding purposes. The hospital staff is often focused on taking care of sick patients. Chances are, if your pet is boarding at a hospital he will be taken care of only after all the sick animals have been attended to. Veterinary hospitals often are not staffed 24-hours, so your buddy may be spending a lot of quiet time alone. In addition to that, he may be hanging out with a bunch of sick pets. Not good.

However, many veterinary hospitals have a separate staff and facility designated for boarding. This could be an excellent option, just be sure to check it out in person.

When visiting a boarding facility make sure the animals are kept safe while spending time outdoors. They should never be left in any confinement area unattended for long periods of time. I've heard horror stories of dogs escaping from outdoor pens while boarding staff was inside cleaning kennels. Make sure all fences look secure, especially if you dog is prone to being an "escape artist

Also make sure that your pet is not given any toys or bones he could choke on. Many kennels have restrictions on the types of toys and treats you can leave with your pet which is a good sign because it means that they are aware of choking hazards.

When checking out a kennel be sure to find out what kind of schedule your dog will be on. How often will they feed him? How often will he go outside? Do they allow you to bring his own food? Can he have his special blanket?

Ask your veterinarian if they know of any good boarding facilities. Often they know the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to kennels in your area. Just be sure to visit any kennel you are considering for your pet in person. You may even want to take your pet along for the ride so he can tell you what he thinks of the place too!

Pet Sitter service

Are They Suitable for your Pet?

A Pet Sitter is a contracted service provider who takes care of a pet in its own home. The professional pet-sitting industry is growing rapidly because many pet owners feel that there are advantages to using pet sitters, rather than traditional pet care options. Reasons people use pet sitters include:

Possible reduced stress on pets because pets are cared for in their own homes

No "travel trauma" to pets because they do not need to be transported anywhere

Exposure to illnesses and parasites of other animals is minimized

Required vaccinations are often less restrictive then those necessary at a kennel

Pets stay on their regular routines and do not need to adapt to a new environment

No inconveniencing neighbours, friends, or family members

Professional pet sitters are often licensed, and insured for liability including care, custody, and control of the pets in their care. Many pet sitters are also bonded or insured for theft. Pet sitters usually have training, such as pet first aid certification, animal husbandry classes, or pet sitting accreditation. A number of professional organizations exist to help pet sitters improve their services.

In many areas, no special occupational license is required for pet sitters. The term "licensed" is often used by pet sitting professionals to refer to licenses to do business, kennel licenses, and/or animal transportation permits available within the coverage area of the business. These licenses may or may not be required, depending on the location. Licenses are not available in all areas.

There are many different services which can be offered by pet sitters.

Vacation

During vacation pet sitting, a pet sitter visits a client's home several times, as required. The exact length of visit is determined by both pet owners and pet sitters, averaging about fifteen to forty-five minutes. Most pet sitters bill clients on a per-visit basis, including additional charges for multiple pets, travel expenses, and special tasks. Less commonly, pet sitters offer live-in care.

Dog Walking

Pet sitters also provide dog walking services. Disabled clients and the elderly often hire pet sitters to exercise and care for their pets if they are unable to do so.

Pet sitters may also offer other more aggressive methods of exercise for dogs during dog walking appointments. These may include jogging, running, inline skating, bicycling, or dog scootering with client dogs.

Other Services

Pet sitters also provide some home sitting services for clients, tending plants, and giving homes a "lived-in" look to deter crime. Pet sitters are sometimes hired to transport pets.

Great lens with useful information. We take our dogs with us when we can but I think pet sitters would be great for cats. Not sure about dogs. I guess it depends on both the dog and the sitter!

A pet sitter is much better than the kennel. Our pet sitter moved to Prague and he is missed. He even watched our dog on Christmas eve as his family lived in the area. How do you replace a pet sitter like that?

Excellent lens with lots of helpful info for pet owners.

We used a petsitter for our cats but never for our dog. Always had a very good experience with the petsitters, but somehow I was comfortable doing that for the cats but not the dog, so we either take her with us on trips (we do camp and hike a lot, so it works out fine) or she stays with a family member. But I know not everyone has that luxury. I'm just a fanatic about my dog, I guess. This is great info, at any rate, and I definitely do think a good petsitters is MUCH, much better than a kennel. Even a kennel at a vet's office.
