    Puppy Facts

    • Mixed-breed dogs usually have behavioral traits similar to the breed they most resemble in appearance.
    • At birth puppies are deaf, blind, and have almost no sense of smell. They stay near their mother and siblings because of the warmth.
    • A puppy's eyes do not open until it is 10 to 15 days old. Its vision is usually not complete until it is about four weeks old.
    • A female carries her young about 60 days before the puppies are born.
    • The most confident puppy in a litter often makes the worst pet because he sees himself as the pack leader.
    • Puppies should remain with their mother until they are at least eight weeks old. During this time, she will teach them not to bite, and how to get along with other dogs.
    • When a puppy is removed from its mother, don't make it spend the first night alone. Its loss of family is enough for one night.
    • During its first week 90% of a puppys time is spent sleeping and 10% eating.
    • At the age of three weeks a puppy will develop its sense of smell.
    • A puppy will sleep for fourteen hours every day.
    • A puppy is considered an adult at the age of one year. At this age it is as physically as mature as a fifteen year-old human.
    • More than 5 million puppys are born every year in America.
    • There are a total of 157 types of dog breeds recognised by the AKC (American Kennel Club).
    • When the pup is three to four weeks old, 28 teeth will break through the gums so the puppy will be able to eat solid food. At 4-7 months of age, the baby teeth fall out and are replaced with 42 permanent adult teeth.

    Riggs named most "Beautiful Bulldog"

Riggs beat out a 50-dog field that included the likes of Sir Grizwald Snorzalot, Napoleon Underbite and Crazy Legs Da Moose to take the crown. Contest organizers acknowledge the event is more about a winning personality than beauty.

The last thing you're going to get with a bulldog is beauty," said master of ceremonies Dolph Pulliam. "But bulldogs have character. They have a certain look...they're the kind of dog you look at and you get scared. But you know what? These are the friendliest darn bulldogs in the world." (full article)

    "What is a Breeder?"

    Author Unknown

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting A Breeder (with a Capital "B") is one who thirsts for knowledge and never really knows it all, one who wrestles with decisions of conscience, convenience, and commitment.

A Breeder is one who sacrifices personal interests, finances, time, fancy furniture, and deep pile carpeting! She gives up the dream of long luxurious cruises in favor of turning that all important show into this years "vacation".

The Breeder goes without sleep (but never without coffee!) in hours spent planning a breeding or watching anxiously over the birth process, and afterwards, over every little sneeze, wiggle or cry.

The Breeder skips dinner parties because that litter is due or the babies have to be fed at eight. She disregards birth fluids and puts mouth to mouth to save a gasping newborn, literally blowing life into a tiny, helpless creature that may be the culmination of a lifetime of dreams.

A Breeder's lap is a marvelous place where generations of proud and noble champions once snoozed.

A Breeder's hands are strong and firm and often soiled, but ever so gentle and sensitive to the thrusts of a puppy's wet nose.

A Breeder's back and knees are usually arthritic from stooping, bending, and sitting in the birthing box, but are strong enough to enable the Breeder to show the next choice pup to a championship.

A Breeder's shoulders are stooped and often heaped with abuse from competitors, but they're wide enough to support the weight of a thousand defeats and frustrations.

A Breeder's arms are always able to wield a mop, support an armful of puppies, or lend a helping hand to a newcomer.

A Breeder's ears are wonderful things, sometimes red (from being talked about) or strangely shaped (from being against a phone receiver), Often deaf to criticism, yet always fine-tuned to the whimper of a sick puppy.

A Breeder's eyes are blurred from pedigree research and sometimes blind to her own dog's faults, but they are ever so keen to the competition's faults and are always searching for the perfect specimen.

A Breeder's brain is foggy on faces, but it can recall pedigrees faster than an IBM computer. It's so full of knowledge that sometimes it blows a fuse; It catalogues thousands of good bonings, fine ears, and perfe

One should not breed dogs "for fun". It should only be done to further the breed. And, it should be done with great care and reservation. There are too many dogs in shelters and rescue programs because someone thought it would be a good learning experience for their kids...or myriad other senseless reasons. Your lens helps to point the foolhardy in the right direction. I must say, however, that while I believe in and support animal rescue (participating in my breed club's programs), I do not agree with the "Don't Shop, Adopt" mentality. While it attempts to make a statement with regard to the overwhelming number of unwanted animals, it totally ignores the importance that responsible breeders (not oops-breeders, pet stores or puppy mills) play in furthering the quality of the breeds that they love. Thanks for putting the proper spin on such a complex and vital topic. If you want to learn more about the breed that I love check out my lens: http://www.squidoo.com/life-is-better-with-a-gordon-setter.
