From the lens Who Let the Dogs Out? The Essentials of Dog Breeding.

One should not breed dogs "for fun". It should only be done to further the breed. And, it should be done with great care and reservation. There are too many dogs in shelters and rescue programs because someone thought it would be a good learning experience for their kids...or myriad other senseless reasons. Your lens helps to point the foolhardy in the right direction. I must say, however, that while I believe in and support animal rescue (participating in my breed club's programs), I do not agree with the "Don't Shop, Adopt" mentality. While it attempts to make a statement with regard to the overwhelming number of unwanted animals, it totally ignores the importance that responsible breeders (not oops-breeders, pet stores or puppy mills) play in furthering the quality of the breeds that they love. Thanks for putting the proper spin on such a complex and vital topic. If you want to learn more about the breed that I love check out my lens: http://www.squidoo.com/life-is-better-with-a-gordon-setter.

Good for you and your anti-puppy mill stance! I am for responsible breeding that strengthens the integrity of breeds. Great lens!

I'd never heard the term "whelping" before. Anyhow, I've met very, very responsible, conscientious, and caring breeders ... and I've met quite the opposite. I wish there could be more oversight of some kind, so the ones that shouldn't be breeding could be put out of business.

About 20% of dogs in shelters are pure breds, bred mostly by breeders. responsible breeders have licenses and inspections and try to make sure thier puppies are placed in good homes who will care for them forever. the other 80% are mixed breed dogs who where given to iresponsible people who chose not to spay or neauter thier pets and these unwanted uncared for pets breed radomly and often. More spay neauter laws need to be in place and more breeders need to be willing to pay for the privledge to breed.

If 20% are purebreds bred mostly by breeders and 80% are mixed breed dogs then it seems to me breeders are less of a problem then irresponsible owners who just let there dogs make more and more mutt puppies. Maybe those people producing all the mixed breed dogs need to be fined. Not the responsible breeders. Also a responsible breeder will take a dog back for any reason no matter how long it lives. So the dog shouldn't end up in a shelter unless the new owner drops it off behind the breeders back.

I COULDN'T agree more with d-artist. I can only stress to others to PLEASE be a serious and responsible breeder. DO NOT DO IT FOR MONEY. If you are a serious "breeder" you will not make money by breeding. (You will often lose money or break even after vet care IF you are breeding LEGALLY.) This is a very informative lens. I just had to mention these facts!

dog owners should be responsible when breeding their dogs...there are way too many dogs in the pound or rescue centers that did not ask to be born but have to live the concequences of irrisponsible breeding...love your dog and be a responsible breeder.

I just wanted to say that you have a very informative lens and I loved reading it.

I also wanted to remind everyone NOT to breed unless you are doing it for the betterment of the breed and to look at local shelters for a pet that needs a home before considering buying a pet :)
