Pete the Cat
ete the Cat loves his brand-new white shoes so much that he wrote a song about them. But as he walks down the street, he steps in a mound of red, juicy strawberries. Does Pete get upset? Goodness, no. Instead, Pete continues along singing his song about his cool, new, red shoes. But what happens when he steps in a pile of blueberries?

Using Pete the Cat in Storytime
Want to use Pete the Cat in library or preschool storytime? I've used it in 3-5 year old storytime, and a friend used it in Walkers and Twos. All went great. You can read the story straight from the book, make a simple flannelboard (only need a black cat and simple shoes in white, red, blue and brown) or act out the story. To act out the story, simply make felt shoes and take off the colored layer at appropriate times!
To Make Shoes:
*Cut out 2 shoe shapes (see below) to fit your foot size in red, blue and brown felt. Cut out 4 shoe shapes in white.
*Sew Along the blue dotted line.
*Turn right side out.
*Attach the prickly side of a velcro dot to back of each shoe.

No flannelboard, try this easy roll up magnetic flannelboard.
Pete The Cat Doll
Amazon Price: $18.25 (as of 06/02/2012)![]()
If your child has read the book so much they have the story memorized, they may need their own Pete the Cat doll.
Or if you run a library or preschool, take fun pictures of Pete in cool places and display. Show Pete hanging out in a display, with the puppets, at the playground, on the children's librarian's desk, with the toys, etc. With the 2011 Summer Reading theme One World, Many Stories, display photos of Pete in places library staff go on vacation... even if it's just to the local museum.

- Pete the Cat sounds like a winner. I've never read it. I like most picture books. Richard Scarry's are especially fun. It seems like there's always lots going on in the pictures.
