Famous music piece by Sergei Prokoviev

"Peter and the Wolf" belongs to the first pieces of classical music I ever listened to as a teen. We had a large library of LPs at home (I belong to the generation which grew up with LPs, yes!). Both of my brothers played a musical instrument - one played the piano and the other one the clarinet.

Listening to "Peter and the Wolf" I learned to recognize musical instruments and to associate them with animals, but also with feelings like happiness, joy or sadness.

The Composer

Sergei Prokoviev

Sergei Prokoviev (on the photo left with his second wife Mira) was born in 1891 and died 1953. He was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor who is considered of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

He left Russia in 1918 and went first to the United States and then to Paris. In 1935 he returned to Russia, and one year later he composed "Peter and the Wolf". He died in Moscow in 1953 on the same day on which Stalin died..

Prokofiev probably was on of the most popular composers of 20th century music. His orchestral music alone is played more frequently in the United States than that of any other composer of the last hundred years, save Richard Strauss and Dmitri Shostakovich. His operas, ballets, chamber works, and piano music are regularly played in the big concert halls worldwide.

The Story

A boy Kills a Wolf

The story is about a boy, Peter, who lives with his grandfather. They live near the forest where the big wolf is roaming freely. Peter, who loves to run free with his animal friends, is told to stay inside so that he is safe from the wolf. He obeys sullenly and watches his friend, the duck, being attacked and devoured by the beast.
He wants to take revenge and manages to get out of the hut. He hunts the wolf and catches him with a rope. Three hunters who have also been looking for the wolf, find him with his quarry. They accompany him on his triumphant way home.

The Music

Music written with an educational goal

Sergei Prokofiev wrote "Peter and the Wolf" in 1936 after his return to the Soviet Union. It is a children's story (with both music and text by Prokofiev). The story is told by a narrator, the composition itself is one for orchestra.

Everyone of the story's characters has got his special instrument and theme. The hero, Peter, is presented by the strings; his friend, the duck, by the oboe. Whenever the cat appears, you hear the clarinet. The flute is playing, when the bird flutters around, and the french horns announce the Big Bad Wolf.

Peter and the Wolf

Walt Disney film from 1946

I like this animated film made by Disney in 1946 very much. It has got a very good introduction to the main characters and the way they are represented by certain musical instruments. There are however some minor changes to the plot (the duck is not eaten by the wolf) in order to make it more child-like.

There is a second part on Youtube - so if you like the video and want to know how it goes on, just click on the video itself and it will lead you to it.

Peter and the Wolf

Animated Film from 2006

This animated film was made in 2006 and got an Oscar for the best animated film in 2008. There is no narrator in the film, just the puppets and the music.

Like you I learned the instruments from this piece as a child; I've never forgotten the version narrated by Sir Peter Ustinov. Super lens.

Oh my goodness, I must be old. This brings back all of it (the Disney version) although I was already familiar with the music because in our house, we only listened to classical and church hymns. Thanks for the fond memories. Did play flute and clarinet in high school, some influence from Peter and the Wolf I think. Angel blessed

I love this piece of music! It's definitely a favourite, has been since childhood. Thanks to Peter and the Wolf I learned my woodwind instruments at school! I remember both the animations and love them both too.
