Iraq War Veteran Sgt. Peter Damon

In October 2003, National Guard sergeant Peter Damon was performing his duties as a helicopter mechanic when a tire he was inflating on a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter unexpectedly blew up. The high-pressure nitrogen explosion severed Sgt. Damon's arms, but he was the lucky one. His friend and fellow mechanic, Army National Guard Spc. Paul J. Bueche of Daphne, Alabama did not survive. The young soldier was only 19.

Due to his extreme injuries, Peter Damon spent 15 months at the Walter Reed Medical Center. During his long recovery and rehabilitation at the armed forces hospital, Sgt. Damon developed a talent for painting. His works have been on display at The Russell Senate Office Building Rotunda in Washington, D.C. and at a number of gallery showings. Sgt. Damon, along with his wife Jennifer, had the honor of presenting a painting to President George W. Bush during his last week in office, January 2009.

The Damon family resides in Massachusetts and many of Peter Damon's paintings feature scenes from the New England area, including his home town of Brockton. Other favorite destinations include nearby Provincetown and Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Cape Cod. Before the accident, Sgt. Damon enjoyed songwriting and playing the guitar. His love of music shines through in one of his latest works, called Jazz Trio. The artist often listens to 50s and 60s jazz while painting.

Many of Sgt. Damon's colorful paintings are featured below (be sure to vote for your favorite!) Peter Damon's most recent creations are introduced on his blog, Sgt. Damon's Art Blog and his latest post is also provided below.

Blood Brothers by Michael Weisskopf

A True Story Featuring Sgt. Peter Damon and Other American Heroes

Blood BrothersSeasoned journalist Michael Weisskopf served as an embedded reporter in Iraq, assigned to soldiers of the First Armored Division. One day while riding through Baghdad in an Army Humvee, he heard a metallic thud inside the vehicle. At his feet rolled a small object, which he did not recognize as a live grenade. As he reached down, the grenade exploded and Michael Weisskopf lost his hand.

Blood Brothers is the story of Michael Weisskopf's recovery—again, alongside soldiers—in Ward 57 at Walter Reed Medical Center, a wing dedicated to the rehabilitation of amputees. Sgt. Peter Damon was one of the soldiers with whom Michael Weisskopf bonded during the several months he spent in the armed forces hospital.

Peter and Jennifer Damon operated The Middleborough Art Gallery in downtown Middleborough, Massachusetts for three years. The popular gallery showcased the work of more than 40 local artisans and included original paintings, prints, photography, pottery, handwoven baskets, handmade jewelry, and unique wall hangings. Middleborough residents and teachers supported the art gallery, and the couple have plans to reopen in the future. They now have a private studio where Peter continues to create paintings for a growing client list. Peter's paintings are a joint effort—Jennifer takes the photographs on which many of them are based. A Christmas Message from Peter Damon

From the Artist's Private Collection: Jingle All the Way

I'd like to wish everyone who has visited my blog during the past 3 months a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year too. Please say a prayer for our troops who cannot be with their loved ones this holiday season. I'd also like to especially wish any service member, who may be spending this Christmas recovering from wounds or sickness in a hospital such as Walter Reed or Bethesda or Landstuhl, a Merry Christmas as well. I spent 15 months at Walter Reed myself, and as I need not tell you it can be extremely tough being away from home, especially now, when need for family support is paramount to your recovery. Keep your head up, it gets better. I can only hope that seeing this blog gives you some slight spark of hope and inspiration that may lift your spirits. Get Well Soon! Merry Christmas!
