Pete Seeger Sings for Peace
Pete Seeger: The Power of Song

I first heard Pete Seeger on the radio singing "Little Boxes" about the way that farmland was being eaten up by suburban sprawl. That song made me think about the houses where Dick and Jane lived in my first grade reading books. I heard him sing "Who will feed the people when they take away my land." I saw farmlands in my home town turned into shopping centers and listened to Pete Seeger.

As I started to be old enough to understand the Vietnam War I listened to Where Have All the Flowers Gone and I knew in my heart and through his music that war was wrong.

Now I listen to "Peace, Peace will come. Peace will come and let it begin with me..." I sing along for the hope it brings my heart.

Pete Seeger just makes you want to sing along. The words to his songs touch your soul. When you hear him sing "How can I keep from singing?"

Pete Seeger's Storytelling Book

Most people know at least a handful of Pete Seeger songs, such as "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" and "The Hammer Song (penned with fellow Weaver Lee Hays). Most preschools own a copy of Pete's story-song "Abiyoyo". Well, now it's YOUR turn to be the storyteller!

Pete Seeger and Paul DuBois Jacobs give you pages and pages of wonderful stories, some Pete learned from his father, musicologist Charles Seeger, and many that were learned during his travels throughout the world.

My favorites are the sequel to "Abiyoyo" - yes, you heard it correctly - titled, "Abiyoyo Returns", and "The Intelligent Lightbulbs" (in which 4 lightbulbs literally go to school!). Also included are several story beginnings, with a gentle nudge by Pete and Paul to finish the stories yourself.

This book is a fantastic addition to any school or home library, and will provide the reader with hours and years of fun that they can share; maybe it'll even inspire a new generation of storytellers! by Charley

Using Pete Seeger's Songs to Sing Your Way Into Reading

Pete Seeger

Singing can make young students better readers. When you take a song like Pete Seeger's Turn Turn Turn

Turn Turn Turn lyrics / Pete Seeger
To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time for every purpose, under Heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time for every purpose, under Heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time for every purpose, under Heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time for every purpose, under Heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

Activities Make a chart and sing the song often with the children until they know it well.
1. Look for words that are repeated and ask children to use highlighter tape on them.
2. Make a copy of the song and put it into a three ring notebook in the classroom libray to be read during silent reading.
3. Make a class book of the contrasting ideas expressed in the song.
4. Make cards of opposites and play concentration. Put both pictures and words.
5. Start a compost bin with red wigglers and encourage the children to add apple cores etc. to turn into compost and later use the soil for planting.
6. Learn about gears and pullies

The Peaceful Woodlands Game: Make a board game with woods and a graph pattern overlaying it. Glue green felt to the board and use a permanent black marker and yardstick to make a grid on the felt. It could look like a checker board. Make pictures of various animals with their names printed underneath and glue them to squares of cardboard. Make a photo album with the same names and blank squares for the photo to go. Make large black squares to represent darkness. Use a wooden 1" natural block to make a die.

Use the river rocks for Fung Shui counters. Using natural materials gives a peaceful feeling. Put the flannel board trees around the board. Place the pictures of animals around the board. Roll two wooden dice and move the stones through the Peaceful Woodlands where they encounter woodland animals. Each time they get to an animal's home they get to collect a picture of the animal. Children work together trying to collect a picture of each of the animals and put them in the photo album before darkness. If you roll a number one darkness begins to fall and you must cover up one section of the board. Rolling a six means that you can uncover one section.
