Dog Food Recalls
The dog food recalls that have been occurring over the past several weeks are part of the largest recall in history, covering dozens and dozens of pet food manufacturers, including some who claimed to be producing high quality and premium pet food.
Now the truth emerges. Hardly premium quality if deadly toxins such as melamine were present in grains used in these foods. Grains that were being purchased from very questionable sources in China, where profits were being put above everything.
Nothing new really. Pet food manufacturers have been hoodwinking the public for decades. Advertising happy, healthy pets to mislead the public into believing that commercial pet food is good for our pets. It's not. Never has been. Never will be. Although the official number of pet deaths confirmed by the FDC is barely into the double digits, it is believed that the count is much, much higher. A realistic number is probably closer to 4000 deceased pets, and 12000-15000 pets that have been affected by contaminated pet food.
3,973 pets have been reported as deceased to the PetConnection database.
Of these, 2,058 are cats, and 1,815 are dogs. Total reports of all owner-suspected cases of food-related illness: 12,419.
There is a very well respected Veterinary Only Website called Veterinary Information Network (VIN). VIN sets a range for probable deaths at 2,000 to 7,000, based on survey of VIN member veterinarians.
What to look for if you suspect your pet might be affected:
Most pets vomit or become suddenly sick after eating contaminated food, and the reactions are happening quickly. However, the long reaching effects of pets having eaten small amounts of contaminated foods is not well known.
If you see
-vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, lethargy
-increased or decreased drinking
-increased or decreased urinating
-mouth pain or mouth ulcers
-severe dehydration
then see your veterinarian immediately.
And what can you do to keep your pet healthy, and avoid any possibility of your pet coming into contact with contaminated food in the future?
- Always feed your dog fresh food, or the highest quality premium foods. Nothing else will do. Your dog's health, and indeed your dog's life, depends on you doing the right thing by your dog.

Petco in Trouble Again
Petco is in trouble AGAIN, this time for storing various pet foods in such unsanitary conditions that the FDA recommends "consumers who have handled products originating from the PETCO distribution center should thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap. Any surfaces that came in contact with the packages should be washed as well. Consumers are further advised as a precaution to thoroughly wash products sold in cans and glass containers from PETCO in the 16 affected states." (Those states include Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.)
The FDA obtained a court order for U.S. marshalls to go in to the Petco distribution center and seize pet foods that have, for at least the past two months, been subject to widespread and active rodent and bird infestation. The FDA described the conditions as both filthy and unsanitary.
And they want us to feed that stuff to our pets?
I, for one, am taking a stand. I will never feed substandard commercial food to my dogs again.

Compensation for Contaminated Pet Foods
By Meg Kinnard, Associated Press Writer - January 2008
COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- "A company that made contaminated pet food that killed dozens of dogs in the U.S. will pay $3.1 million (euro2.1 million) in a settlement with pet owners, an attorney said
Friday.
The pet food, which contained a mold called aflatoxin, was produced at Diamond Pet Foods' plant in South Carolina. The company will set up a fund to reimburse pet owners for the loss of their dog,
veterinarian bills and the cost of any unreturned contaminated food, said attorney Jim Andrews, who represented a Knoxville, Tennessee, family that sued the company.
Diamond Pet Foods, based in Meta, Missouri, acknowledged that workers at its Gaston, South Carolina, plant failed to follow internal testing procedures to ensure its products were safe. The company made the acknowledgment after the Food and Drug Administration released a report showing the company has no record of test results for 12 shipments of corn in 2005, when grain tainted with the deadly fungus slipped into the plant.
The company contends it did nothing illegal, according to the settlement. Mark Schell, Diamond's assistant general manager, did not immediately return a telephone message.
Aflatoxin, a naturally occurring chemical that comes from a fungus sometimes found on corn and in other crops, can cause severe liver damage.
The contaminated pet food was sold in 23 states. Diamond recalled about 20 varieties of dog and cat food when a New York veterinarian said in December 2005 that she had linked a dog's death to the company's food.
The 2005 recall is unrelated to the contamination problem that prompted recalls of more than 100 pet-food brands in early 2006. In that case, investigators traced pet deaths to a toxic chemical, melamine, that had been added during manufacturing in China."
