How to choose a pet for adoption

Are you considering a pet adoption? This site is made to help you choose a suitable pet for your kid. I made a list for you of the top five most kids-friendly pets you can choose from.
I personally have a lot of experience with pets. I started having pets (sometimes several pets at once) from an early age - puppies, parrots, fish, dogs, cats, turtles, bunnies, hamsters, you name it - I've had it. Ooops, sorry, the only thing I stayed away from was reptiles and spiders (I'm arachnophobic and frankly I'm not a snake lover like most women I believe). But let's focus on the pets suitable for kids.

The important aspects of adopting a pet

First I would like to tell you something very important.
It is unreasonable to expect a child of any age to take the sole responsibility for care of a pet. A child's interests can be based on a whim but the pet still requires daily care and love. You as an adult have to think about these two very important questions:
Are you as an adult willing to invest time, effort and money in the new addition to the family?
Are you willing to make a commitment for years to come?
Because having a pet for years (some pets can live for a couple of years, others can reach more than 80, yes, some parrots can even outlive you) is a big responsibility.
Many parents know that the best way for their children to learn compassion and the importance of keeping commitments is by helping to care for a pet. Children learn from watching the adults in their lives. If a child can learn to treat an animal with respect they can take that lesson into later life.
No matter what pet you choose, recognize that the parent is ultimately responsible for the health and well being of the animal. It would be very sad if you take a pet home because your child decided that the little doggy from the commercial she saw today was soooooooo cute and she definitely wanted one immediately. A week later she decides she's no longer interested and you get stuck with an unloved pet you want to get rid off.
But if you and your child really want to find and adopt a pet and you are ready to give and receive love, here are the top five most suitable and kids-friendly pets to choose from.

The all time favorite pets are the puppies and dogs.

Choose a dog for your kid

Choosing a kids-friendly dog. Dog breeds suitable for kids

I'm sure we all know lots of things about dogs. They are friendly, loyal and great companions for kids and adults.
When getting a new puppy for the family, one of the most important things to consider is how well the pooch will interact with kids - especially toddlers and young children. I found this site for you. It gives great advice on click me

It's good to consider training the dog as it will be around kids and it needs to be obedient and trustworthy. The following breeds are the most kids-friendly.

Golden retrievers - These dogs are some of the most fun animals for kids. They like to play a lot, they're always ready to have fun, and they have great temperaments. Some of their favorite games include playing ball, which enables your child to have a dog with which to play. The Golden retrievers need to be groomed, as their hair is long.

Labrador retriever - These dogs are quite friendly animals. They are known for being ready to play at all times, and kids can do just about whatever they want with the lab, and the lab will respond favorably.

Collies - These dogs are among the most predictable and gentle dogs of all. They are easy to train. They get along great with kids and can be playful but mild-mannered. They do require some grooming, as they typically have long hair.

Poodles - These dogs are smart and gentle. Poodles traditionally will let kids do whatever they want. They aren't easily intimidated. They need grooming too.

Cocker Spaniels - These dogs are very lively and intelligent and they love kids. They need to be groomed as well and their ears need special care because they are hanging down. They need to be checked on a regular basis (ear problems).

Basset Hound - These dogs are calm, friendly and very loyal to their family. They don't require much grooming.

Beagle- These dogs are sweet and affectionate and known for getting along well with children. Again, short-haired dog - not much grooming required.

Whatever dog or puppy you choose you might consider potty training it especially if you have kids or just for simple hygienic reasons.

The importance of owning a friendly and trainable dog

Whatever dog you choose you should consider the breed's character first. You should aim to find a mild-tempered, gentle, obedient and trainable dog.
The best dog should be with outgoing, friendly temperament. Overall there are many breeds that are known to be energetic, smart and playful with a great rep for being good with kids to choose from. I personally would avoid dogs that are known to show some aggressive behavior like Dobermans, Pit-bulls (I believe they are illegal in some countries), Rottweilers, Chihuahuas (don't laugh) they aren't too fond of kids either.
The most common age for a child to be attacked by the family dog is two years of age. At this age the child is usually very curious and clumsy and she might poke the dog in the eyes or pull it's ears or try to play with the dog when it's eating or sleeping. This might provoke the dog's aggressive behaviour. Learn from the best source the secrets of How to train your dog.

A dog will attack when it feels afraid, is teased or is defending it's food or puppies. If you choose to get a dog for your child, you should teach your toddler to leave the dog alone when it's sleeping or eating and how important it is to respect the dog.
If your child is ever bitten by a dog she may require a tetanus injection.

Cats are kids-friendly choice too

If you choose a cat for your child

Cats are known to be lovable, tender, playful and temperamental. If you choose to get a young cat or older cat in both cases you have to show your child how to be patient, quiet and gentle to help the cat feel safe. What you can do is to sit on the floor with your child and help her practice patience as the cat gets up the courage to come closer. Let your child feed the cat a piece of food from his hand. Once the cat realizes that your child is no threat to her, the ice will melt.
Very young children can easily overwhelm a cat or kitten with their exuberance. Children under the age of five years should always be supervised when playing with or handling a cat. You have to show your toddler how to hold the cat, how to caress the cat, how to be gentle with the cat in general. Cats are gentle animals that need gentle treatment. Otherwise, if you mistreated your cat you could end up having a little "monster" in the house. The cat's aggressive behaviour could start as attacks on you and your kids, the cat could start scratching, biting, pooping in your shoes, etc. That's why you should teach your child to respect the cat. Children over 12 years can usually be trusted to be gentle, but be sure to occasionally check up on kids under 12 years when they spend too much time with the family cat.
You must teach your baby or toddler not to touch the cat's litter and droppings.

Cats and sandpits:
Cats love to use sandpits as one huge kitty litter tray, so to keep your sandpit clean and clear of cat droppings, make sure that you always keep it covered when you're not using it.
Regularly rake your sandpit through to check for droppings, along with other rubbish that may pose a risk to your child.

Those cuddly little rabbits

What do we know about rabbits

Let's start with the positive aspects of the pet-rabbit.
Rabbits are good pets because they:
- are quiet and can learn near-perfect litter box habits
- are fun to watch
- have different personalities just as individual dogs and cats do
- don't need a yard if given plenty of indoor, sun-lit exercise space
The downfall of getting a rabbit for your kid is that rabbits are physically delicate animals. They can be hurt by children picking them up. Rabbits also may either run away or try to bite when approached too quickly and too loudly. They can suffer from stress-related illnesses. For these reasons, many children, especially very young children, will find it difficult to interact with a rabbit and soon loose interest. If you choose a rabbit for your child for a pet you must teach your child not to touch the droppings and litter.
In general though, a medium to large breed adult rabbit is usually better for a child. They will command the most respect from a child and are easier to pet because they have larger heads. Dwarf breeds tend to be more excitable, energetic and aggressive. Baby rabbits are very active, often nippy, and chew everything in sight. Adult rabbits are more easily litter- and house-trained, especially after neutering. You will also have a better idea of a rabbit's personality if you choose an adult who is neutered.

Having fish for a pet

The easiest pet

Then there are goldfish or any kind of fish for that matter. Fish you're pretty safe with. But fish you'll probably get pretty bored with too. They're not easy to take for walks for one thing and they can't be hugged or played with.
There are hundreds of different kinds of fish that can be kept as pets. Goldfish are the most commonly kept pet fish because they live in cold water.
Tropical fish need to be kept in an aquarium with a filter to keep the water clean. Some tropical fish need heated water and lights.
The good thing about having a fish for a pet for your child is that finding a dead fish is usually less traumatic than discovering other deceased pets. Also taking a furred pet to the vet can be expensive compared to a fish.
Fish are one of the least expensive pets to buy. A few dollars can get you a new fish for your aquarium at many pet stores. The cost of the aquarium and associated equipment can be expensive to set up however.

Hamsters are cute and kids love them

The most popular small pet

Hamsters are rodents that make ideal pets for young kids who go to school during the day as they are nocturnal, sleeping during the day and waking in the evening. They are fun to watch but may be are not the most suitable pet for a baby or toddler unless an adult supervises the kids at all times when holding or playing with a hamster.
Their cute appearance, lack of smell, relative ease of care and the wide range of species, colours, etc make hamsters the most popular small pet in many countries today.
Apart from the initial expense of the cage and equipment hamsters are relatively cheap to keep and require less care than larger pets. They are ideal pets for those living in apartments or small houses. However, as with any pet, keeping a hamster does require a commitment to caring for it during its lifetime, including veterinary treatment if necessary. Do you want to know more about How to take care of a hamster ?
Hamsters have to be handled with care though because of their size. A toddler for example might not know or unable to hold a hamster gently and properly. That might provoke the hamster to bite the child. Hamsters don't typically bite but when they feel threatened they might defend themselves. Small kids have to be supervised while playing or holding a hamster.

Pets and family health

Things to consider before getting a pet

There's nothing more heartbreaking than having to find a new home for the beloved family pet because of health issues in the family. So consider the following before you choose the next addition to your family:

Allergies

If any of your family has allergies, you should have testing done to see if there is an allergy to the pet you have chosen before you get that pet. Some people are allergic to dog, cats or rabbits, but not to hamsters for example. You should always check for allergies first before bringing the pet home.
Practically all pets can set off allergies - rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, all of them. So always expose all members of your household to them before taking them home, just in case. Snakes and lizards are ok - but plenty of people aren't too happy with the concept of a snake or lizard in the house.

Worms:
- Dogs and other pets can spread ringworm (which is a fungus not a worm) to humans.
- Gastrointestinal worms (hook, whip, round, tape worms) can be passed from dogs to humans and cause illness.
- If you own a pet, you should regularly worm the entire family - children, adults, pet.

Fleas and Lice:
- Fleas are easily transferred from animal to human - annoying but not a health problem.
- To keep your pet free from fleas, you need to use appropriate chemicals on a regular basis - while fleas will generally disappear during winter (the colder temperatures keep them at bay), they will appear the moment the weather warms up. This means that all the eggs that were laid last summer will now hatch.

Thank you for your comments. I agree with you that ALL animals might eventually bite when stressed or defending themselves. I'll revise my lens. Yes, I did my research before i wrote this lens. I do not agree that being "runners and barkers" the basset hounds and the beagles are not suitable for kids. I do not agree with you that hamsters are bad for kids as well. I personally had 4 hamsters when I was a kid and I remember playing with them during the day. Most animals nap during the day. Hamsters do not stink more than a dog or a cat. I did not have any problems like that with my pet hamsters. I'm not saying anything about the rats as pets because I never had any. By the way rats might be more intelligent but they are still nocturnal animals.
