Petra Pictures Just Don't Do It Justice

I Want To Take My Own Petra Pictures

You just need to take a glance at these Petra pictures to know why a visit to the "red-rose" Jordan city is on my list of places I want to visit. From a visual perspective, Petra is stunning and quite ornate. The ancient city is carved into the rose-colored walls of Jordan's Shara Mountains. From an archeological and historical perspective it is a gem. The Nabataeans who built Petra are thought to be among the wealthiest people ever to live in the Middle East. The people along with their riches, simply disappeared.

Although created over 2,500 years ago Petra wasn't discovered by the western world until 1812. Now it is not only listed by BBC as one of "the 40 places you have to see before you die" it has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1985. UNESCO describes Petra as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage."

Here you will find Petra pictures, both professional and personal. My friend and neighbor visited Petra earlier this year, and was kind enough to allow me to include some of her photos. I have also included resources to learn more about Petra. If you can't visit someday, enjoy your time on this page. Either way, I hope you can see how it came to earn a spot on my bucket list.

Somewhere to put on my 'bucket list'

flycatcher says:

Definitely, keep it on the list. I need to live vicariously through you! :)

poddys says:

It's definitely on my list, keep it on yours too. It's a truly unique place to visit, and one of those where photos just can't do it justice.

OhMe says:

Oh, I think it would be breathtaking

Kimbesa says:

Any place that Indiana Jones has been, I wanna see, too!

Serenia says:

I really want to visit Petra too. I need your inspiration to eventually get there. Absolutely you have to KEEP it on the list,

JuneMary says:

It's well worth visiting, the carving is wonderful. Not to be done in a day though because the valley is huge and there are many monuments up in the hills, which I missed because I had only one day. I need to go again!
Best to visit in Spring or Autumn when it's not too hot because there is not a lot of shade and remember to have good footware.
There are hotels before you get to the Siq, which you can ride up and down on horseback.
Hope you enjoy it.
JuneMary.

Keep it! I love learning about history and these photos are beautiful but spark the curiosity! Take some pics when you get to go!

Petra looks awesome. I'd definately go.

Petra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Petra, meaning rock; is a historical and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that is known for its rock cut architecture and water conduits system.
Experience Petra
The giant red mountains and vast mausoleums of a departed race have nothing in common with modern civilization, and ask nothing of it except to be appreciated at their true value - as one of the greatest wonders ever wrought by Nature and Man.

What's Stopping Me?

petra picturesMostly just the geographic proximity to my home (it's half way around the world), and the cost. When I some day visit Petra, it would seem more logical to combine it with a trip to Egypt and Israel - both of which would increase the trip budget. But to travel for nearly 24 hours and not visit the wonders of the world in the area, seems a bit silly. Someday I will see Petra. My enthusiasm for it has increased since Hazel's return and I was so pleased she shared her photos.

I first saw Petra on a film we were shown at school, one of those new age religion films from back in the late 60's. I would love to go there, it's such a unique place, one of those that you absolutely have to see for yourself. Excellent lens, your neighbours are so lucky to have been there, and the photos are wonderful. Blessed.
