Petrified wood is the state fossil. Most of the petrified wood in Arizona can be found in the Petrified Forest in the northern part of the state. It is well worth the trip. A nice relaxing sight seeing at many stops along the route. Petrified Wood is from ancient trees that turned to stone. Many specimens are from Brazil however Arizona has one of the largests concentrates in the world. Petrified wood is mostly quartz, but traces of opal and chalcedony may be visible as well. Petrified wood is formed when mineralstypically in the silicate form replace the dead tissues of the plant. In order for a plant composed of woody materials to become petrified it must first be covered with sediment.

Fossil plants are some of the most widely recognized fossils ever found. Coal, amber, jet, petrified wood, and some forms of crude oil are all unique forms of fossilized plant material. Fossils of some of the earliest dinosaurs, strange giant reptiles, weird-looking plants and unusual fish have been found at Petrified Forest National Park since 1981. Nicknamed Gertie, the dinosaur discovered in 1984 continues to confound paleontologists, who are still looking for clues to her place in the family tree.
