Training Cats

There are many individuals who are fond of cats because they are adorable creatures. In fact, some people prefer cats to dogs because these felines are more independent and are actually easier to take care of. Contrary to the belief of some, cats can be very affectionate and friendly. This is the reason why they may make a wonderful pet. Sure there are breeds that can be standoffish but this is more of a temporary mood than a general demeanor. Probably one of the most interesting thing about cats is that they have different "catsonalities." No two cats are exactly the same when it comes to behavior. There are quiet and reserved cats and there are also those naughty and hyperactive kitties that always seem to be running all over the place.

I have three cats. One is a Maine Coon and is friendly to all. Another is a tuxedo cat that will stand back and observe for some time before he approaches strangers. The third is scared of his own shadow. My wife and I are the only two people on earth and all the rest are out to get him.

One of the best cat-training tips that you can get is to understand why cats behave in a certain way. All the actions of cats are based on something. It could either be that they are simply bored or they could also be going from one stage of being a cat to another. Some types of behavior can also be caused by certain sicknesses. Try to determine which of these are the reasons why your cat is acting the way it is so you will be able to provide the appropriate solutions whenever a problem arises

For example, my Maine Coon decided she liked to urinate on our bed. This was new and unusual behavior. We took her to the vet and she determined that our cat was having kidney problems so we altered her diet and the problem went away.

Understanding your cat's behavioral patterns is an important thing to do that will allow you to do something about some of its behaviors that are not really productive. What you can do is to list down the positive and the negative traits of your cat. Start with the most significant traits. They say that it is not possible to erase a bad habit but it is very much possible to replace a bad habit with good one. If you start to see a new bad habit developing then you must arrest it immediately to avoid it from being a full-fledged habit.

If you want to train your cat then you must have the patience to do so. Training a cat can be very frustrating sometimes especially if the cat is particularly hard headed. Avoid shouting at a cat when it is not following you because it absolutely does no good and can even harm your cat psychologically. There is also the possibility that your cat will turn hostile if you start shouting at it.

Some cat owners feel the need and the urge to reprimand their cats whenever it does something wrong. They should avoid this urge because reprimanding cats will only lead them to hide their misdoings from you. When a cat stops using his litter, it may mean that it is sick. Some owners feel that their cats are misbehaving when they avoid using the litter. This is not the case. Before you scold your cat for not using the litter take it to the vet first to be examined for any sickness. Keep in mind that cats instinctively know how to use the litter and will continue to use it unless there is something wrong with it. This is the reason why new cats brought to a new home instantly know where to do its dirty business. When sickness is ruled out, that's the time to conclude that your cat us misbehaving and that its behavior must be corrected. There are cats, however, that really cannot be trained with using a cat litter. Such cats can be trained though to tell its owners when it is time to pee and defecate. When they provide the signal, you should take it out to your hard for it to do its thing.
