Peyote Helpful Hints

Peyote a difficult stitch?

Quite a few beaders have tried and failed to do the peyote stitch. It took me a while but looking through the internet for tutorials and videos helped me a lot. But my peyote always came out stiff. I sent out the word to all of the great beaders on my list and they sent me back my comments. With their help, I learned to make a soft, silky peyote bracelet. I was so excited. Then I started looking for ways to start peyote as that is the most difficult part of peyote other than odd count peyote. I found a few of those. I will be putting some of that information in this lens. I will also give you the links to the blog posts I wrote to explain these situations.

Hopefully, this will help you to learn how to do the peyote stitch so that you will learn to like it.

Oh the picture here is a pattern called Starry, Starry Night by Van Gogh, by my friend, Suzanne Wester.

Starting Peyote

One of the major problems for beaders

Cardinal I beaded in Peyote for my DadOne of the major problems identified by many beaders whether they are beginners or experienced is starting the piece. This has turned many a beader away from beading the peyote stitch.

I shied away from it for quite a while because I felt it would be too hard. I had found a book that had a cardinal picture in it by Fel Bullock that I wanted to bead up for my Dad as he is a Cardinals baseball fan. I got it out and found out it was peyote so I played with it using several tutorials on the internet. I finally was able to get it finished with a whole lot of frog stitching (rip-it, rip-it, rip-it). This is the picture attached to this module.

To get some helpful hints on how to start your peyote piece, go to my blog and look at the tutorial on Starting Peyote Tutorial. This article will show you several variations of ways to start your peyote.

This lovely pattern contains a pen wrap, lighter cover and lip balm cover. This would be a good set for anyone, male or female. If they don't smoke, I am sure they light candles or something else....even if they only give someone a light. If you don't bead and want one, you could always contact me.

How to get your Peyote to be soft and silky

Patriotic Turtles CuffWhen I first started creating projects with peyote, I would keep my tension very tight. This is what everything I read told me to do. Everything I beaded up was stiff as a board. Of course, I thought it was supposed to be that way. Then one day, I won a contest sponsored by SandFibers. It was so beautiful it made me want to cry. It was so soft. Then my friend, Suzanne Wester sent me some work that had been done by her bead fairies so that I could take pictures of them. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. They seemed to run off my hands like water. They were so silky, soft. I decided to ask all of the different beaders I knew how they make them soft. I got several replies back and decided to share it with everyone. Her is the link to How to Get Soft Silky Peyote. I hope that this helps you like it did me. The picture here is the first item that I finished that had that soft silky feeling.

NEVER SAY

you can't do it. Once you do, you can't do it. You just jinxed yourself.

I'm not a beader, but this stuff is really lovely. I had to check your lens just to find out what peyote was!
