Lipitor ad campaign cancelled

A Seattle rowing club mentioned that one of their members was the body double for the doc in the Lipitor ads. Congress says "what?" and Pfizer got in trouble...whoops! Doctor Robert Jarvik isn't even a practicing doctor and he wasn't taking the drug until a month after he signed the million dollar contract to be in the ads...someone's got some explaining to do!

Cholesterol

Lipitor is a drug that lowers cholesterol. It is not the first to be questioned. The whole disorder known as high cholesterol and the way it is treated is sometimes a question in the medical research community. I explain high cholesterol's association with heart disease and the controversy of cholesterol lowering drugs on Suite101.

The ad campaign

Estimated to cost more than $200 million since January 2006, the 2 year ad campaign by Pfizer featured an M.D. who invented the artificial heart more than 25 years ago. But a body double was used in some activity scenes and his actual use and experience with the medication lead Congress to question the integrity of the ads. Pfizer decided to cancel the campaign in February 2008. I wrote about the call for investigation on MileHive and followed up the day after Jarvik's testimony.
