Part One - My General Golf Chipping Teaching Ideas & Concepts

"Learning is experience. Everything else is just information."
~Albert Einstein, Twentieth-century Scientist

My main ambition when I work with a student, is to get them to feel certain things in their golf swing that weren't there before. By using special drills which I have modified over the years, the student establishes better habits and in so doing synchronizes themselves with certain Laws which I use as a blueprint to work from.

Correcting golfers mistakes is not what I call teaching. But if by way of an alternative exercise, a fundemental is restablished or a mistake is eliminated, then I would consider my work to be effective.

I have always said that it's easy to stand in front of a student and tell them what they're doing wrong, anyone can do that, but the skill lies in
knowing what the student has to do to improve the mistake that is apparent or needs correcting.

Often I will see for instance that the player has lifted the left heel up at impact, which signifies to me that their weight is actually staying on their right side instead of being on their left foot.

Normally you would look at the fault and call it a mistake.

What I do is see the mistake as a reaction or an effect and then look for the cause or the action.

In this case it would more than likely be that the transfer of weight was happening at the wrong time, or it was due to an outside-in "over-the-top" swing movement, the club was thrown away from the player's right shoulder and naturally what goes away from you must come back to you, the resulting
force of pulling the arms into the body, creates the need for the player to get out of the way by lifting their left heel which forced the weight back onto the right foot.

Because I have been working with certain "Unwritten Laws" during the last seven years, I have been able to trace many mistakes that occur in the golf swing back to simple causes, which when eliminated create a much more natural looking golf swing which is also easy to repeat and doesn't cost the student a lot of frustration.

The hardest part is educating the student to align themselves with these Laws and start feeling the difference. By using the ball as the "teacher" the
student quickly sees what's needed to be done, because they can relate to the improvement or the new performance of the ball in respect to how it used to fly for them.

BALL DIRECTION CAUSES

Balls which go off to the right are either caused by a weak grip or the grip pressure is to tight and the natural release of the club which the right grip pressure offers, is restricted. The shot is also known as a "block".

Balls which go off to the left are normally due to too much upper body rotation which sends the club away from the players right shoulder during the downswing, causing an "out-to-in" swing line or an "over-the-top" movement, as it's also referred to.

Where the ball eventually comes to rest is dictated by the club face position prior to or just after impact. The simple formula for understanding where the ball starts and where it lands is as follows:

THE SWING LINE DICTATES WHERE THE BALL STARTS AND THE CLUBFACE POSITION DICTATES WHERE THE BALL LANDS.

New RSS: More Interesting Stuff from The Sand Trap!

You Shouldn't Be Scared of Bunkers!

The Sand Trap .com was begun in September, 2004 because the founders, all golf nuts, wanted a place of their own to write, to share opinions, and to gather together and exchange comments.

They all love golf, and they couldn't find very many fan-driven golf sites on the Intertubes.

They tried to join a few, but the ones that existed were primarily one-author sites and simple blogs.

The Sand Trap .com offers news, swing tips, opinions, and a whole lot of commentary.

They're an opinionated bunch of real golfers with real day jobs. They may not cover every news story - or even the vast majority of golf news - but they're golfers to the core, and that shows in their coverage of the things that they discuss. Enjoy!

What's So Important About Golf Chipping?

You may be suprised at the "Check-list" of things to do......

For any golfer wanting to get their golf ball as close to the hole as possible, they have to also make sure that they have a specific way of completing the stroke that's ahead of them.

Check out the list below to see what's missing in your approach to golf chipping.

Who knows, there may just be something here for you to discover which will really make a difference to your chipping.......!
  • How far is the ball from the putting surface?

Depending on how far the ball actually is from the green can affect the way that your ball responds to the stroke you make.

For instance, if the ball is close to the putting surface, you could use a putter to get the ball moving.

But very often the fringe or "frogs-hair" is slightly longer than the green and this will affect the roll of the ball considerably. This is where you should consider using a different club to get the ball over this area and land it on the putting surface where it can eventually roll out towards the hole.
  • Is there anything between your ball and the hole?

Very often you'll find that there's a slight dip in front of your ball or a small swale that could send the ball off in a different direction to the one you intend. If there is anything there, you'll need to make allowances for it before you make your stroke.
  • How far must the ball actually roll to get to the hole?

If your ball is quite near to the flag, you will need to select a club that will help the ball to stop fairly quickly. We will either select a club with more loft like a Sand Wedge or a Gap Wedge and then we'll add more loft to it by "opening" the face slightly and aligning our feet, knees and hips more to the left of our target, or we'll take a less lofted club, like a wedge or a nine iron and hit the ball softer.

There's a handy way for you to remember the main clubs used for your chipping strokes. I still use this formula today whenever I play and I know it will help you a lot.

The cornerstone of your three clubs which you should concentrate on using whenever you chip is the Pitching Wedge. Think of it as being the club you would use whenever you need to have 50% [carry] and 50% [roll].

Now if the situation demands that the ball rolls a long way, I would suggest that you use an eight iron and plan to have 1/3 [carry] and 2/3 [roll]. You'll be suprised how easy it is to judge where the ball needs to land and then how far it's going to roll towards the cup.

Now if the situation is reversed and the ball doesn't need to roll so far, then I would suggest taking your Sand Iron and letting the ball go 2/3 [carry] and 1/3 [roll].

I see lot's of my students getting their seven irons out for a short chip and then hitting the ground before the ball, because they decelerated coming into the ball. This normally happens when we choose the wrong club and try to manipulate the cluface in some way.
  • Is the ball going to fall to the left or the right as it approaches the target?

You know "Green-Reading" is a very special attribute that many golfers never really manage to learn properly. Whenever you stand behind the ball and you're looking directly towards the hole, take a little time to have a look at the area to the left and right side of the hole.

Sometimes you may be able to see a bit of the cup liner sticking up in the air. If this is the case then you need to accept that the ball will come towards the hole from that side. That's what we call the "high-side" and I'm sure you've heard the expression before.

If you don't see any ridges or swales and everything looks very flat, I want you to now focus on the sprinklers that are positioned around the green.

By joining one or two sprinkler heads together in your mind you may suddenly see a high side and a low side!

This is where the ball is going to respond to and we want to know how.

Another trick is to imagine that you're going to throw a bucket of water out along your intended line and where you feel the water will go, that will also be the line. Water always tries to go to the lowest point and so does a golf ball!

Now in the next section we'll discuss the stroke itself and how you should play it. Keep coming back to see if it's been added.

Feel free to copy this article and place it on your own page, but I would appreciate it if you would add my footer to it.........
