A Person, A Novel, A Movie, A Musical
The Phantom of the Opera began as a novel written by Gastron Leroux in 1909. In the novel we are introduced to the character Erik, or the Phantom of the Opera, a horribly deformed musical genius also known as the "Opera Ghost."
Over the years since Phantom of the Opera novel was published, the story has become several movies, television program and a multi-award winning Broadway production.
The phantom has been portrayed in film or plays by Lon Chaney, Michael Crawford, Gerald Butler and Colm Wilkinson. The songs from the musical adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber have been sung by notable contemporary artists incluing Josh Groban and Antonio Banderas.
In 2006 Phantom of the Opera became the longest-running Broadway musical of all time with more than 7,500 performances.

A Person - Excerpt from the Phantom of the Opera
The Opera ghost really existed. He was not, as was long believed, a creature of the imagination of the artists, the superstition of the managers, or a product of the absurd and impressionable brains of the young ladies of the ballet, their mothers, the box-keepers, the cloak-room attendants or the concierge.
Yes, he existed in flesh and blood, although he assumed the complete appearance of a real phantom; that is to say, of a spectral shade.

Other Potential Phantom Actors on YouTube
Josh and Antonio have performed Phantom of the Opera songs at Andrew Lloyd Webber shows. I would like to see both of them as the Phantom, for different reasons.
While Freddie Mercury of Queen didn't sing Phantom Songs, the character that he portrays in the "A Kind of Magic" video is very phantom-like. I would have loved to see Freddie lend his performance style to the role of the phantom.
Who do you think would make or have made the best Phantom?
Josh - Antonio - Freddie

1925 Silent Film Version of The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 silent film directed by Rupert Julian adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel of the same title. The film featured Lon Chaney in the title role as the masked and facially deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere.
The film also features Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Gibson Gowland, John St. Polis and Snitz Edwards. The only surviving cast member is Carla Laemmle (born 1909), niece of producer Carl Laemmle, who played a small role as "prima ballerina" in the film when she was about 15.
The movie was adapted by Elliott J. Clawson, Frank M. McCormack (uncredited), Tom Reed (titles) and Raymond L. Schrock. It was directed by Rupert Julian, with supplemental direction by Edward Sedgwick, and Lon Chaney (unconfirmed).

I am obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera, especially the movie and the broadway musical, so I lllooovvveee this page!!!!!! Good work, hunny :-)
When I saw Phantom of the Opera, I just said to myself, "That was really the Phantom out there!" The point is, Gerard really brought out the character in that movie! All in all, the movie version was successful because of actors like Gerard Butler and talking about the movie, it was really awesome and I wouldn't bother watching it over & over again! I'm so hooked up with Phantom & everytime I hear Music of the Night, it made me cried a tear especially "...let your soul take you where you long to be (pause, heart beats faster, teardrop starting to flow)...only then can you belong to me..." OMG, my tears are flowing as I'm writing this.... Thanks for this 5-star lens of yours....
