It sounds rather crazy that after so many years of medical research on the human body, that we STILL don't understand much of what makes it work. The physical properties are difficult enough to understand, yet alone the abstract like thoughts, feelings, and sexual attraction.
But relatively recently an olfactory nerve, known only as 'Nerve O' was discovered just inside the nostril that is actually connected directly to the brain. This nerve bypasses the normal sensory channels and is most probably responsible for perceiving the glandular secretions of the opposite sex known in mammal biology circles as pheromones.

A pheromone (from Greek ???? phero "to bear" + ??????? "hormone") is a chemical that triggers a natural behavioral response in another member of the same species. There are alarm pheromones, food trail pheromones, sex pheromones, and many others that affect behavior or physiology.
