Who is Phil Hartman?
Phil Hartman was a Emmy Award-winning writer who was tragically killed on May 28, 1998. Not only was Hartman a writer, he was also an actor, voice actor, comedian and graphic artist. He gained widespread fame in the late 1980's and early 1990's as an actor on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. This lens is a tribute to his life and career.

Phil Hartman (September 24, 1948 - May 28, 1998) was a Canadian-born American actor, comedian, screenwriter and graphic artist. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Hartman and his family immigrated to the United States when he was ten. After graduating from California State University, Northridge with a degree in graphic arts, he designed album covers for bands like Poco and America. Feeling the need for a more creative outlet, Hartman joined the comedy group The Groundlings in 1975 and there helped comedian Paul Reubens develop his character Pee-wee Herman.
