The MIMAROPA Region

MIMAROPA

MIMAROPA is one of the regions of the Philippines. It is one of two regions of the Philippines having no land border with another region, Eastern Visayas being the other, and is designated as Region IV-B. The name is a portmanteau combining the names of its provinces, which are: Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan.

In May 23, 2005, Palawan and Puerto Princesa City was moved to Western Visayas by Executive Order No. 429. However, in August 19, 2005, Pres. Arroyo issued Administrative Order No. 129 to hold the earlier EO 429 in abeyance pending a review. Presently, Palawan and the highly urbanized city of Puerto Princesa still remain a part of this region.

Mindoro

:For the unincorporated community of Mindoro, Wisconsin in the United States of America, see Mindoro, Wisconsin.

Mindoro is the seventh-largest island in the Philippines. It is located southwest of Luzon, and northeast of Palawan.

Provinces

Oriental Mindoro

Oriental Mindoro (Filipino: Silangang Mindoro; Spanish: Mindoro Oriental) is a province of the Philippines located in the island of Mindoro under MIMAROPA region in Luzon, about 140 km southwest of Manila. The province is bordered by the Verde Island Passage and the rest of Batangas to the north, by Marinduque, Maestro del Ocampo Island, Tablas Strait and the rest of Romblon to the east, by Semirara and the rest of Caluya Islands, Antique to the south, and by Occidental Mindoro to the west. Calapan City, the only city in the island, is the provincial capital.

Oriental Mindoro is touted as the country's emerging eco-tourism destination. In 2005, the Philippines was found to be the center of marine fish biodiversity and the home of the most diverse marine ecosystem in the world, by American biologists Kent Carpenter and Victor Springer. Most of the endemic species in the Philippines are found in the Verde Island Passage between Mindoro island and the main island of Luzon. The passage houses 2,983 individual species of algae, corals, crustaceans, mollusks, fishes, marine reptiles, and marine mammals, based on a study conducted by scientists Carpenter and Springer in 2005.

Our study indicates, however, that there is a higher concentration of species per unit area in the Philippines than anywhere in Indonesia, including Wallacea... Special attention to marine conservation efforts in the Philippines is justified because of the identification of it as an epicenter of biodiversity and evolution.

UNESCO, declared Puerto Galera a biosphere reserve under its Man and the Biosphere Programme in the 1970s. The Verde Island Passage is at the apex of the so-called Coral Triangle ? the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia ? which has the distinction of being the "global center of marine biodiversity".

Occidental Mindoro

Occidental Mindoro (Filipino: Kanlurang Mindoro, ?Western Mindoro?; ) is a province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region in Luzon. "Home of the Indigenous Mangyans". Its capital is Mamburao and occupies the western half of the island of Mindoro, on the west by Apo East Pass, and on the south by the Mindoro Strait; Oriental Mindoro is at the eastern half. The South China Sea is to the west of the province and Palawan is located to the southwest, across Mindoro Strait. Batangas is to the north, separated by the Verde Island Passage.

Marinduque

Marinduque is an island province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region in Luzon. Its capital is Boac. Marinduque lies between Tayabas Bay to the north and Sibuyan Sea to the south. It is located south and west of Quezon, east of Mindoro, and north of Romblon.

Romblon

Romblon is an island province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region in Luzon. The province consists of numerous islands sitting in the Sibuyan Sea. It lies south of Marinduque and Quezon, east of Mindoro, north of Aklan and Capiz, and west of Masbate. The three major islands are Romblon Island, Tablas Island, and Sibuyan Island. Its capital is the municipality also named Romblon located in Romblon Island; they are near the centre of the archipelago, and the most northern islands of the Visayan group, hence it belongs previously to Western Visayas, but later its regional grouping was transferred later to Southern Tagalog (Islands) Region IV-B or MiMaRoPa Region.

The northern islands of the Archipelago known as Maghali group or Tres Islas form with the islands of Mindoro and Marinduque clear, deep channels, much frequented by Philippine boats; the islands are also indented with well sheltered inlets and bays. The province was organized into Politico Military Commandancia in 1853. The islands constituting the province are as follows: Banton Island, the most northerly island of the group; Maestro de Campo Island, the westernmost island of the province; Simara Island, situated in-between Tablas and Banton; Tablas Island, the largest island in the group; Sibuyan Island, the second largest easternmost island in the group; Carabao Island, the southernmost island of the province, and Romblon Island, the third island in size, giving its name to the group and the province on account of central location and mineral wealth which is Marble.

Romblon is the country's leading producer of high-quality marble, comparable to that of Italy.

Palawan

Is Palawan in MIRAMOPA or the Western Visayas Region? At the time of writing it has been pulled mack to MIRAMOPA because of irregularities in the way the transfer was affected. it may be that the situation will change with proposals for a more regional/federal structure.

Palawan is an island province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, and it is the largest province in the country in terms of total area of jurisdiction. The islands of Palawan stretch from Mindoro in the northeast to Borneo in the southwest. It lies between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. The province is named after its largest island, Palawan Island, measuring long, and wide.[http://www.wowphilippines.com.ph/explore_phil/place_details.a...

Cities

Calapan City

There are only two cities in the region. Calapan is by default the regional center, given the possibility of Puerto Princesa City being transferred to the Western Visayas as party of Patawan.

City of Calapan is a 3rd class city in the province of Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. It is the capital city of Oriental Mindoro and known as the "Gateway to the Golden Isle". According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 116,976 people in 20,929 households.

The city's economy is dependent on agriculture and fishing. However, a growing industry in machinery and tourism has contributed well to the city's annual income making it one of the fastest growing new cities in the last 10 years. Calapan City also serves as the gateway to the Oriental Mindoro province with the implementation of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway, an integrated Roll On-Roll Off project of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that extends further to the southern part of the Philippines. The Calapan City Seaport is the largest and busiest seaport in the Mindoro island with ships that travels to and from the Batangas City International Seaport. Calapan City is 45 minutes away from Batangas City and is accessible by ferry boat and RORO ships.

Calapan City is currently one of the only two cities (the other being Puerto Princesa City) in the MIMAROPA region of the Philippines.

Puerto Princesa

The City of Puerto Princesa (Filipino: Lungsod ng Puerto Princesa), the capital of Palawan, is a first class city in the Philippines. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 210,508 people in 33,306 households. It is famous for its crocodile farms, underground rivers and dive spots. It is also the second largest city in the Philippines (after Davao) in terms of total land area. This city is the hometown of the former House Speaker Ramon Mitra, Jr..

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features a spectacular limestone karst landscape with its underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it flows directly into the sea, and the lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The area also represents a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full mountain to the sea ecosystem and protects forests, which are among the most significant in Asia.

On 30 June 1992, Edward S. Hagedorn was elected Mayor of the city and completed his three term limit of three years for every term. In November 2002, Hagedorn was re-elected as mayor of the city.

As the city was recently declared a highly-urbanized cityThe Philippine Standard Geographic Code listing for Province: PALAWAN specifies the City Class for Puerto Princessa city as "Highly Urbanized"., per Section 29 of the Local Government Code of the Philippines, it is no longer under the administrative supervision of the provincial government of Palawan, and its residents are no longer eligible to vote for provincial officials.Local Government Code of the Philippines (RA7160), Chan Robles Law Library.
