Australia is amazing place to vacation, but if you're looking for something a little less mainstream for your upcoming holiday, try planning a visit to Phillip Island. Phillip Island is an island off of the coast of Victoria, Australia, not far from Melbourne. Phillip Island was named for the first governor of New South Wales, Arthur Phillip, and measures 26 kilometres in length.

Kick it into Gear
Motor racing has been a part of Phillip Island's culture and appeal for years. In 1928, a circuit that was created using some of Phillip Island's interior roads was used for the first Australian Grand Prix. The race was held on this circuit every year until 1935. The Phillip Auto Racing Club was founded in 1952, and its great following led to the immediate construction of the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, which opened four years later in 1956. The Armstrong 500 race was held there for three years starting in 1960, and was then relocated to the Mount Panorama Circuit and eventually renamed the Bathurst 1000. The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit was eventually redeveloped and began hosting motor biking competitions in the 1980s. Today, the circuit is still used as a racing venue for many races, including the Australian Drivers' Championship, V8 Supercars and the Superbike World Championship.

- I really love Phillip Island too. We've had three holidays there in seven years! The little penguins are just absolutely awesome. Do yourself a favour and pay a bit extra for the closer boardwalk view of them; it is such an experience to see them waddling past just metres from you. The koala reserve is also excellent. Our first time there we spotted a koala joey that had popped out of the pouch for a look around.

- I'm not too fond of the fast cars, but everything else on Phillip Island is truly attractive, especially the wild life
