A look at an influential and under-appreciated author of the twentieth century. Writing in the sci-fi genre, Dick was a philosopher and sociologist, taking seemingly ordinary situations to most bizarre but logical conclusions.

An Introduction to Philip K. Dick

During his lifetime, Philip K. Dick was popular mostly as a writer of short science-fiction stories in pulp magazines, producing over 120 early in his career. He published 44 novels, mostly science fiction (for a complete list, see The Official Philip K. Dick Site. His brilliance has been recognized widely only after his death.

Several films have been based on Dick's stories, including Minority Report, Blade Runner, and Total Recall.

Philip K. Dick wrote about the ordinary Everyman in bizarre situations. His work was heavily influenced by the drug culture and political paranoia of the 1950's and 60's. The worlds created in his stories are dark and full of illusions, many of them provided by technology. Dick's stories often depict "the near future," when the world has become plastic and life has become artificial. These writings are certainly not a tribute to progress or technology, but rather how the body, mind and soul can be numbed or manipulated by it. Stories often highlight the influences of government and the media in daily life.

"I am a fictionalizing philosopher, not a novelist; my novel & story-writing ability is employed as a means to formulate my perception. The core of my writing is not art but truth. Thus what I tell is the truth, yet I can do nothing to alleviate it, either by deed or explanation."
