I Think! Thereby, I Think More

I am a philosophy major in college. This is because of two things: I have no clue what I want to do in life, and I am a very ponderous person. I am always thinking about stuff, probably a little too much, but every once in a while it results in a realization or bit of insight into how the world works.

Here is what I most recently stumbled across in my meandering thoughts. It is a realization about my self, of how I am and how I should be, that I think can be applied to many other people who grapple with issues of self-identity and confidence.

Please let your mind wander while you read, and then let others hear your thoughts! Who knows, you could be on to something insightful and deep, the kind of stuff meaning in life is made of :)

Using Intellect, Acting With Truth

This is what I have concluded

I came to the realization recently that I am capable of so much more. It is not that I did not already know it; I recently realized it. With every action and decision I make, I could put my sincere thought process into it, but normally I do not. This requires being true to one's self in a way that I mostly never am. By being true to one's self, I do not mean simply not to lie; I mean that one should be genuine about thinking the truth, knowing the truth, feeling the truth, and acting the truth.

I think that last part, action, is the part I never was able to master. I did not make the effort to put truth into practice, into its place in my actions, which is a necessary part of being true to the self. Instead of thinking 'I should do laundry today...' and never doing it, I should fuse the thought and the action together, using my intellect. This togetherness of thoughts and actions, if practiced regularly enough, should become like second nature, to the point where I do not have to think too hard, and thoughts and actions guided by intellect are more like one thing. This helps keeps rifts from forming in me, rifts between what I want and what I do, what I think and what I do, causing confusion as to what my Self really is, and who I am. It also should give confidence, as it means that in many cases I would have to go against my timidity or cowardice to do what I know is right, true, and/or smart.

If I know very precisely what and who I am, it should make every moment of life a lot more fluid and meaningful, beautiful.

What Do You Think?

Say Anything

So please, let me know what YOU think - make any point you want or write anything you think is interesting related to the (pretty general) topic. Feel free to let your mind wander, as it might take you somewhere unexpected and insightful :)

I sometimes think that I think too much and need to get my brain to relax and turn off -- I think Squidoo might be to credit for this hyperactivity! ;)

Hi Sean!!! There are too few lenses like this one!! I loved it! It's a mine of wisdom and profundity that is very rarely found, and your honesty about yourself is highly engaging!! Being fairly introspective myself, I can really relate to this!!

    Some great stuff there.
The power of intuition (the ability of brain to find pattern in experience/memories - a side effect of storing and retrieving information as interference patterns) is powerful, and in common situations most often accurate. Thus in the normal realm, the relam of tested experience, then I would agree, that it is acting one's truth that is important.
When one is dealing witht he unfamiliar, intuitions (those untested feeling about what is so) are not so reliable, so it is powerful to shift to another level of action, where we test our truths before taking action that will have too great a consequence. And sometimes we do not have the luxury of such time to test, and action is required rapidly - trusting our own truths is then the best course of action - provided those truths are oriented towards service to ourselves, others and life; and come from love. We all have other modalities, and they are usually inappropriate.

My 2c worth for the morning.

I too have a philosophy degree, love to read others thoughts, ideas to enhance my outlook and think you are touching on a holistic view of life which allows you to be truly a part of lfe, entering it holy in divine intercourse. I practice meditation, breathing exercises to aid this.

What good is philosophy, anyway?

I really am just wondering...

Do you think it is worthwhile in today's economy and highly specializing world to be a philosopher?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

YES - we need philosophers to tackle the big questions and bridge the specialized sciences!

LifeAdviceSite says:

Life requires part philosophy and part action. One cannot exist without the other.

TokeCare says:

I studied philosophy some when I was in college. Minored actually. One thing I learned was that philosophy is not what most people think it is. Most think of philosophy as a place for weird theories and ideas to go when they die.

It's a true tragedy, really. I think the world would be a better place if everyone dabbled in philosophy, ESPECIALLY the scientists!

NO - Philosophers are a waste of thinking skills, and we need more scientists!

Eye of the Tiger says:

It seems all the biggest questions have been answered by great minds of the past, and most new topics that philosophers discus are variations on those big questions. In the end, most of what we know and think about the world is answered by the sciences, and not by philosophers.

Hey, notice how this lens has a refreshing absence of products? If you want to find more like this one, empty of selling modules, look here:

Squidoo Lenses That Don't Sell A Thing
Okay, so maybe they get a share of Squidoo's Google ad revenue, but here I'm talking about lenses without sales modules or product pitches. I'm talking about lenses that exist primarily to make us laugh, to inform and entertain us, to inspire or just make us think.

Not that there's anything wrong with selling! I recently started an internet-based business myself, so, believe me, I have selling on the brain. In this lens, however, I'd like to celebrate and highlight lenses that, in and of themselves, won't make more than about $12 a month (if they're in Squidoo's top tier) on pooled ad revenue, because they don't sell a product or have affiliate links.
