Learning to Think
Philosophy is the study of matters concerning existence, values, mind and ethics. It attempts to answer these fundamental questions by using a critical, systematic approach to the problems posed by asking questions. There are a wide variety of philosophical discussions and schools of thought, so here are just a few of the more common ones.
Philosophical Schools of Thought
There are numerous schools of philosophical thought which cover the different general categories of philosophical viewpoints for certain topics. Here are some of the more common ones.
- Scepticism
- The first philosophical school of thought is known as scepticism, the process of questioning all beliefs and facts to find an answer.
- Realism
- Realists are philosophers who propose that ideas and values are actual thing which exist regardless of our knowing of them.
- Ethical Schools of Thought
- Ethics is a common topic of philosophical discussion, and here we can find the most common ethical schools of debate.
Discussions
Within the world of philosophical debate, there are many scenarios put forward to illustrate certain philosophical discussions. They are ways of getting people to think and discuss the hidden meaning of the scenario or story, and provide an excellent way of illustrating just what Philosophy is all about.
- Are You a Brain in a Vat?
- It seems like an absurd question, but this is one of the key pieces of note in discussing scepticism. With a tail that inspired the Matrix, the Brain in a Vat question is frightening in its implications.
- The Simulation Argument
- This one's a spin-off of the Brain in a Vat question, but one with even greater and further reaching absurdity. Are we all just complex computer characters? Do we live in a simulation? Do we even live?
- Platos Philosophical Cave
- Imagine you had spent your whole life shackled in a darkened cave%u2026 And then were set free. This is the principle behind Plato's Cave, a metaphor for what it means to be a philosopher and how asking questions can change your viewpoint on the world altogether.
