Thinking outside your box...
- One of my early pitfalls and one I have found both beginning and experienced flash developers and designers alike have fallen victom to is a lack of early site structure.
One of the main issues for almost all beginning flash develpers are the early stages and developing a framework. With a good framework you will lessen the amount of time you spend with your head in the keyboard thinking of ideas. Proper preparation will allow you to stay away from design/development blocks and give you more time to truly tap into your potential.
Developers Resource Library
- Macromedia Forums
- I use this primarily for custom coding issues that I am having an issue working out.
- Actionscript.org
- Tons of great tutorials! Has very current flash news and releases. One of my personal favorite all around go to resource sites.
Actionscript.org also offers you fla files that you can download free of charge. A great way for you beginners to take a look at working actionscript. For the Experienced developer, can be a way for you to possibly shorten your build time.
It also has current job postings for Flash designers/developers that you may want to take a look at! - FlashKit
- Everything from interfaces, menus, sound loops, sound controls, movies, graphics, actionscripting, fonts, etc... All able to be downloaded for use on your computer...
- Kirupa
- Excellent site for specific application questions. This site offers hands on tutorials as well as downloadable source files. It will teach you how to do everything from flash php contact forms, random motion, customizable popup windows for images and SWF files, and much much more!!! A must for beginning coders...
- Flash Files
- Young site but over time as content grows it will become better and better. Offers flash, photoshop, sound files and more all from site contributors. Maybe something to keep in your favorites folder.
- Echo Vibes
- A good resource for loops and sounds for your pages.
- Ultra Shock
- Has some nice free fla files for download that may be helpful. The book reviews and much of the content is a little outdated though...
3D
- Swift3D V4
- Swift3D V4 is a great alternative to spending thousands of dollars on 3d programs. For under $230.00 you will have all the tools a beginner will need to add 3d content to sites including buttons, redered objects, etc.
It offers you the option of exporting both vector images as well as rasterized images both set up as individual pics or imported directly into your flash site as swf movie clips.
Visit thier site to look take a look at the program. My site, www.phlexdesign.com, and links in the portfolio features some basic 3d objects that were created with very little experience or practice using this program. - Strata
- 3D program that has swf as an addon option. If you are only looking to do 3d animations in flash this program may be a little much at a price considerably higher than Swift 3D.
If you are looking to get into additional 3D modeling this may be a good way to start on a budjet. - Carrara 5
- Another intersting 3d modeler. Great rendering capabilities. As with all 3d programs will take some getting used to and practice. At a price of around $550 it is more expensive than Swift3D but if you are looking ot do more 3d work this may be a good investment.
Carrara 5 offers many of the features offered on high end tools like Maya without having to spend thousands.
Inspiration...
- PhlexDesign
- I would encourage you to take a look at some of the sites that are listed in the google bar as well. Often they will offer you ideas for your projects...
Many of the template sites out there offer you cheap alternatives for self constructed interfaces as well as great help with understanding how coding all comes together to create a working interactive flash site. - Design Block?
- This site can aid you in coming up with ideas for sites that you are working on. Lots of cool sites that are all organized by catagory and easy to search through. When I'm having a creative block sometimes I find it helpful to look at some of the things that other people have made work.
