Air Conditioning in Phoenix - a Necessity!

Phoenix gets VERY hot in the summertime. The worst thing that can happen is to have your air conditioner break down on one of those extremely hot days.

Chas Roberts has been in the air conditioner installation and repair business in the Phoenix area since 1942 - that's 66 years of awesome service.

122 Degrees and No A/C

I remember June 26, 1990, when the temperature reached 122 degrees. My neighbors across the street had an air conditioner compressor failure and had to have the whole thing replaced.

The air conditioner was located on the roof of the house, and I will never forget watching those poor guys out in that heat, having to install a new a/c unit. No one fell over dead from heat exhaustion, surprisingly enough.

Power Failures = No Air Conditioning

Mall

Phoenix sometimes experiences brown-outs in the summer, which usually means no air conditioning for a few hours. Most people head for the movie theaters or malls, where the air conditioners always work and it's nice and cool. There's no way they can stay in their homes or outdoors for long, without risking their health.

Oven Mitts for the Steering Wheel

Perhaps you've heard that Phoenix residents drive their cars wearing oven mitts in the summer. Well, it's true!

Although the majority of cars in the Phoenix and Tucson areas are white or silver, they still get blistering hot. A metal seat belt buckle will burn you. Car steering wheels get too hot to touch, so many people keep a pair of oven mitts in their car to use until the air conditioner cools things off.

Save Money on Cooling Your Home in the Summer

Floor FanElectricity bills can be very high in the summer in the Phoenix metropolitan area, which includes Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe, Chandler, Glendale, Avondale, and many other towns and cities.
  • The electric companies, Salt River Project (SRP) and Arizona Public Service (APS) will average out your bills so you can pay the same amount all year round.

  • Keep your thermostat at between 78 and 80 degrees in the summer. If you're gone all day, you can turn it up, but don't change it more than 5 degrees.

  • Ceiling fans make a huge difference, since they make a room feel 10 degrees cooler. If you don't have a ceiling fan, use a floor fan.

  • Clean or replace your air conditioner filters monthly.

  • Put blinds or window shades on windows to block sunlight, and put solar screens on the windows. you can also install reflective film on windows for a reasonable cost.

  • Use your microwave or toaster oven rather than your oven to cook meals.

  • Plant shade trees in strategic locations to block the sun.

  • If you must sleep in a cold room, use a window air conditioner in your bedroom at night.
