Phone Bling ~ to each her (or his) own!
Actually, NOT having anything hanging off it was unique and special in Japan! Friends tried to give me stuff to hang off my phone, such as little stuffed animals that (they said) served the purpose of wiping fingerprints off the phone cover, keeping it shiny. But my resistance, when I don't want something, can be pretty strong. I was able to keep my resolve not to have stuff hanging off my phone ~ just the phone, that's all I wanted.
Then I saw something pretty, and sparkly. Hanging off a friend's phone. Like diamonds ~ but of course not diamonds. Pretty. Sue like....
My first phone bling
Okay, I was jealous. I wanted pretty phone bling, then, too. Fortunately, because I was living in Japan, phone bling was everywhere! My first buy was a pearly chain with a faux ~ of course ~ opal on the end. In the little shop where I was, it was the prettiest phone strap they had. They had cute ones, and hobby ones, pet and school subject and logo ones. This was a pretty one, so I bought it.
I attached it to my pretty blue cell phone and ~ like a dork ~ showed it to everyone who might be even mildly interested. Fortunately for me, friends in Japan display interest in even the smallest details!

Remember the sparkly diamond-like phone bling my friend had? The one that made me want my own? Mariko ~ owner of the sparkly bling ~ was the first one I showed my faux pearl phone strap to, and she was indulgent, saying how pretty it was. It is an endearing trait of my Japanese friends that they indulge me ~ it's actually a learned skill, something mothers do to their children, but the sweetness is not lost on adults.Do you know, Mariko gave her lovely diamond phone bling to me as a going-away gift when I left Japan? I see that every day, and think of her, remembering that indulgence and kindness. It helps me try to be indulgent and kind toward others now that I'm back home.
Thank you Mariko!
To Bling, or Not to Bling
Would Shakespeare have had phone bling...?
My third phone bling
This time, I bought one to support a cause. I bought my third piece of phone bling in a fundraiser at work, for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, in search of a cure for cancer.Pink heart, white and pink beads stacked on a chain, ending with a breast cancer ribbon, this phone bling reminds me of the people I have lost to cancer, and those who have fought that battle and won.
In their memory and honor, 100% of all proceeds from this lens will go to organizations in search of a cure. Because the answer could come from anyplace, it's split three ways: 33% to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 33% to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and 34% to the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation.

- Planting Trees and Other Ways to Help
- I just ran across this link online that allows me to 'plant' a tree on my website, and for every tree I virtually plant, they'll plant a real one. Isn't that cool? Check it out! Every Day is Earth Day. But it's not just planting trees ~ it's a whole mind-set, a lifestyle. Earth Day is nice, but we can...
- Survivor Tree at Oklahoma City
- On April 19, 1995, at 9:02 a.m., the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed and destroyed, killing 168 people ~ including 19 children. Three unborn babies were also killed when their mothers died. To read and understand the symbolism at the National Memorial is heart-wrenching....
- More ways to save on gas
- How many ways are there to save money on gas? There are thousands of lenses, blogs, and websites out there now, all proposing ways to save you money on gasoline. So why another one? My hope is to add to the discussion, maybe provide some new tips, and help explain how interconnected our gas usage....

- I liked your lens. I, too, won't be adding any phone bling, but I found your lens interesting. I hope it's okay if I link to it. Thanks.

- I'm not likely to have phone bling since I resist even having a cell phone, but I did enjoy your story.
