Photoartists the New Impressionist of the 21th Century

Ranked #27,195 in Arts & Design, #709,706 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund, Child Aid

Why the new Photoart Artists are like the Impressionists

In the 1830's and 1840's the Church and nobility were basically destitute. Patrons of the past like the Church and nobility had required artists to paint paintings that told a dramatic Church inspired statement or a romantic exotic subject matter. With the rise of the new affluent merchant and robber-baryons middle class, art interests change to subjects about contemporary life, secular, and emotional feelings. The new middle class wanted to propagandize their wealth and successes. Art became more about "what I have" than about "the after life".

New inventions brought new values. Life was moving at a quicker pace. Railroads, steamboats and the telegraph communications quicken the pace even faster. Time was money. Money could not wait. Everyone was in a hurry. Everyone was innovating. Everyone was rebelling.

Journalistic criticism became the standard for keeping up the pace. These new rich relied on the journalistic critics to tell them what was art and what one should buy. In France the press and journalistic critics established the standards of what was art and what was not.
Salons of art became the established standard of artistic values.

The starving and innovative artists rebelled against these standards of the salon establishment.

In 1839 the photographic process became public and quickly grew into competition with the artists. By 1871 a way of using Gelatin was invented by Dr. Richard Maddox, which led to the development of the dry plate process. Making a photograph cheaper and quicker to produce quickly had an affect on the art purchasing public. Why buy a painting of your favorite wife, child or dog when you could get a near-like image in a photograph.

In 1874 in France a group of artists, among them were Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, and Berthe Morisot, left their studios, and began painting what they saw around them in the open air. Much like the new invention of instantaneous photography that captured the image quickly; they used quick economical brushstrokes, capturing fleeting moments and responding directly to the subject to produce a finished product in hours not days or weeks.

Edwin Land founded the Polaroid Corporation to manufacturer his new one-step process, developing and printing photographic camera. The first poloroid camera was sold to the public in November, 1948. Now the photographers were in trouble. Now everyone was an instantaneous photographer. More problems for the artist. How were they going to keep up?

Desktop publishing began in 1985 with the introduction of MacPublisher. This WYSIWYG layout program of desktop typeset printing exploded in 1985 with the introduction of the Apple LaserWriter printer. Then came PageMaker software from Aldus which rapidly became the DTP (desktop typeset printing) industry standard software. Now the photographers were in trouble. The artists are beginning to get a foot back into the art world.

In 2001 the Giclee Printers Association (GPA) was formed. Giclee printing now had standards. Standards that distinct highest quality giclee printing from lower quality ink-jet printing. The term: "Tru Giclee" created by GPA means highest quality.

Giclee prints can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Museum of Modern Art. Giclees have also been bought and sold in prestigious auctions worldwide and have sold for thousands of dollars.

So, now the artist, the photographer, the computer, the printer make it possible for these great works of art.

Art has now become more of an expression of the soul - the soul of the artist - the soul of the object - the soul of the viewer.

Art has moved from impression to expression.

Photoart Artists operate at the cutting edge of art. The image is captured. The image is manipulated in the computer and by the Artist. The image is spit out in little dots (that is what giclee means). The image is an impression of what the artist intended and yet, the final image is an expression of what the viewer wishes it to be. A gift. An art piece. A piece of history. An expression of a soul.

A Note about Photoart

by jGibney

As a self-taught Photoartist it has been an uphill battle for me in the adventure of creativity and the world of art.
My creative mentor, who had started an art theater called "Experiment 6," committed suicide.
Still, going forward and obtaining a BA degree in Humanities at the University of South Florida in 1969
with an interest in play writing and cinema, it was almost impossible to get recognition.

Convincing the Department Head of Humanities that a course on play writing should be offered, I was able to get enough students interest for the class to be presented. Everyone wanted to make movies. So, out I go and obtain a 16mm cinema camera. No one really wanted to make movies. When my witting professor heard that I had a camera, he got a roll of Tri-Xfilm from the ABC affiliate TV station Channel 10.Not even knowing how to put the film in the camera, I got a friend that worked at another TV station to show me. Camera loaded, around the university I went, filming. At the end of the day I turned the film over to the professor. Later, that evening, I got a call to watch the local ABC News Show. And there it was the first footage I had ever shot was on the news. My friend heard about this. Told his station manager and I get a call. They wanted to know if I would shot TV commercials for them. So I did. Later, while working at a law firm in Tampa, the firm needed a photographer to take pictures of accidents. So, I got a camera and I did. People asked me to do their wedding pictures. People asked me to do their portraits. People asked me to do videos. So, I did, but not enough to make a living. Now, let's get to the artist side of photoartist. At the university most of the professors had never seen an Impressionists painting, even though I had. I had been to Europe while in the Army. For one of my classes, we had to do an art project on Impressionism So, off I went to the art store. With oils and canvas, out I went to paint the Hillsborough dam.Submitting my open air painting, I received a B as credit, while another student received an A for doing part of a Seurat (a pointillist painter) picture. Needless to say I was not happy. So, for a long time I would not show my paintings, hiding them or giving them away.

I've always enjoyed art. Thus, I have visited many of the world's great art museums. Always thinking, I can do that. I've done as good as, maybe better. I believe that an art piece should make you stop, look and a long time after, think. What is Photo Art. Photo Art is a term or technique that I used several years ago to describe a method of photographing a subject, printing it and then painting part or all of it to enhance the subject. Each piece of Photo Art is unique and different.Although, the subject maybe the same, no two are alike, due to the printing and painting by the artist. Gibs Photo Art is produced from a "Gibney" that is a reproduction of an original. It has been signed and dated by the photoartist. The Gibney and the Photo Art piece often look similar, but the Photo Art has been enhanced. Often, times this makes the Photo Art more intense. Photo Art is the future of art and art reproductions.
