Photo Art ~ Easy 3D

Photo Art is often easier than the results make it appear. In this lesson we will learn how changing the depth perception of a scene can result in Easy 3D.

In this Photo Art tutorial we will be using one Photoshop filter application and a selection tool to give the illusion of three dimensional imaging.

Remember, the most important thing to learn here is that YOU are the artist. Take this technique and play with it. Experiment. Create your own vision.

Let's have fun!

A Little Easy 3D Deb

My Tools

I use Photoshop 7 and an old abacus of a PC. Sometimes the beads get a bit sticky when I try to slide them over, but I rattle the wire and whistle right along.

More important than this very simple Photoshop centered tutorial is that you get a feel for what can be done. I'm sure that most Photo manipulation software can get you nearly the same results, but it's your eye that will make the difference.

I really don't like most of Picasso's or Dali's work. But I respect them and their works because they were artists who devoted their lives to their individual expressions.

Although this effect is not a true 3D rendering, it does have the feel. Play around with it to get out of it what pleases YOU.

Here we go:

Don't Be Afraid To Save

If at any point you come to unsure territory, save your work as a .PSD file. This way you can always restore it as it was.

Easy 3D Is Really Quite Simple

Step 1
Find the photo you want to play with and load it onto the working pallet.

Step 2
I typically use the PEN tool for my selections because of the ability to adjust and fine tune the selection path. Otherwise, any selection tool can be used as long as the shape selected can be well defined.
Go ahead and create a selection around the object you want to give the faux3D effect to.

Step 3
INVERT The Selection, and then go to FILTER/BLUR/GAUSSIAN. Choose a pixel radius that you think will give you a suitable blur of the "background" images. For this tutorial I used 3.5.

Now you have the Easy 3D effect you were looking for! Just Deselect and save.

Gaussian Blur

Gaussian Blur is a filter that reduces image noise and detail into a smooth blur. The end effect blends the colors of the image. The more filter that is applied, the more of a smooth blur. This is not the same as an out of focus picture.

Make PhotoShop Your Playground

Play around with the Gaussian Blur slide bar to get different blur effects. And maybe even try different filter options. Have fun with it and always remember to be true to YOUR vision.

Here are a few different manipulations of the same photo. All I did was retain the selection and use varying filters and adjustments What do you think?

This is a great tutorial that I can most certainly use! I have Paint Shop, but I think the technique is almost the same.

Playing with photos is fun. At the moment I use the free stuff. Maybe Squidoo will earn me enough for the promo stuff. The application is good to know. Thanks.

Thanks! Now that i have a camera :) and I had no idea the software was so inexpensive. I really have a hard time coming up with just what i want for my websites and I've started researching my next Jung lens.

Yes, please do more of these tutorials. i HATE reading manuals. I usually learn by playing around with the software.

A great helpful lens that is added to my personal "HELP" bookmark folder! I have done some digital photo art, but there is so much to learn! Thank you!

I've never done this! Totally new to me and so cool! I love digital imaging and sometimes get caught up in it for hours picking away bits I don't want. This is so slick, Alex. Absolutely have to use this on my next lens. Keep 'em coming. What other tricks you have up your leather sleeve? :)
