Photoblocker Spray - What is it? Does it Work?

Ranked #1,058 in Cars, #58,135 overall

So What Is the Photoblocker Spray?

Various municipalities are placing flash cameras at intersections and speed traps in the hopes of nabbing people blowing through red lights or speeding. They claim it's for public safety while critics claim it's mainly a revenue grab and has nothing to do with safety.

Other hate the idea of Big Brother looking down on them. I think many of us can sympathize with that one.

Photoblocker claims that it can help. At least against the flash camera part.

How Do These Cameras Work?

So here's the deal: Many municipalities throughout the US are putting up these cameras at intersections with traffic lights. The idea is to catch people blowing through the red lights and ticket them.

Some areas have the cameras attacked to radar guns. Blow through a little too quickly and your photo is taken. Some days or months later you get that little ticket in the mail telling you how much that boo-boo is going to cost.

The way it works is the camera scans an area and when its computer tells it that a car has entered that area, against the red-light or the radar, it photographs the license plate of the car. The data is sent to the ticketing office, the license plate is connected to your address, and you're sent the ticket.

Even if your buddy was driving the car or if it was stolen. Even if it was you.

Photoblocker works by making your licence plate a more reflective surface. The camera flash fires and the plate reflects the flash. What the camera sees is glare, so when your place gets run there isn't enough there for it to be read. Since the plate can't be read you don't get the ticket.

The idea behind the product is to protect you against false tickets. If the camera works perfectly, which is an issue, and if it's you driving the car, then you probably deserve the ticket.

If it's your buddy driving the car, well, you did lend it to him.

Isn't this a Bad Thing?

So why would people want to block an innocent camera? Doesn't it prove their guilt? Well, maybe...

Points to ponder:
  • Should you pay for the ticket if the car is stolen?
  • What if the camera isn't working properly?
  • What if it hasn't been calibrated properly and the measurements/timing are a little... off?
  • What if it's deliberately set to be a little off? Plenty of people have little faith in the honestly of government entities who look at traffic tickets as a lucrative operation.
  • Then there are those who really hate the idea of being snooped on by Big Brother.

Thumbs Up or Down?

So how do you feel about Big Brother (or the Nanny State) automating law enforcement? Is the state competent and capable enough to do this and do it right? Or is it just a cash grab that does nothing towards reducing accidents caused by running red lights?

Is Photoblocker a Good Thing or a Bad Thing?

Yes, it's a good thing, here's why:

xz says:

no all car accidents are caused by speeding idiot G2... there are many factors fools switching lanes.. fools merging incorrectly.. fools slowing down unexpectedly... how do you explain other ecountries who have higher spped limits and less car accidents then we do.. spped is only one small factor in your statistic

Aubrey McCollough says:

photo radar is inaccurate. I was driving approx 17mph in a 25mph zone where a know photo radar van is placed in Zachary, La. This thing flashed as I approached and flashed after I passed. My odometer in this brand new car is not off. THE VAN RADAR IS APPARENTLY MALFUNCTIONING!!! (I will now buy this spray wheither it works or not)

rmel says:

I do not trust the officials who line their pockets with more than their share of my money already. The police love it because they don't have to do anything and they can still pilfer from the public.

Jayson says:

If they are going to issue a ticket then it should be issued by a human police officer... this camera stuff to me is a scam why don't they just ride around on horse and ask every one to take the money out their pockets and give it to them (sarcasm) .. this is bull $#!+ and for the guy that said being against the camera is unamerican... wake up it's unamerican that stuff like the cameras on the corners is possible America is suppose to be the land of freedom and we are slowly having them taken away from us.. I'm not saying it's right to speed or blow off lights but people make mistakes and $100 is alot of money for ticket if your broke... we're in a ressesion!!! wake up people...

Hmm says:

I work at the patent office and there is no patent pending for this as stated opn website. hmm

victor says:

Its a good thing if it works. Most traffic lights are set wrong and offer only about 3 seconds for you to cross the intersection, which in my oppinion is a scamm to get more money!

Bobby the outlaw says:

the companies that operate the scam-o-cams get paid a commission for busting you, corrupt much.

i dont know if the spray works, but i will give it a try. am in favor of anything to defend against the NWO

Mr.VW says:

autobahn for all

DICK says:

F--K-M..NO COP NO TICKET

employe a cop

paul/boston/england/2009 says:

why should you pay anything for going a few mph over a poxy limit you dont want their in the first place?
some of these cameras are in places where the road is suitable for a national speedlimit so that says it all,its just a SCAMERA.How many lives have been saved by using these traps?how does anyone know?
i say get rid of the lot, lobby government to get the local councils to spend the money on good things like tax rebates.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
O,and i just bought x2 photoblockers off ebay uk for £16..
flash away radar trap(cant get me,)

No, it's a bad idea, here's why:

They're out get our money says:

Since my wife received a $158 fine and I saw the video online where she didn't stop one hundred percent make a right on red...and she saw an opening she just took advantage. Going thru a red light is terrible yet that is not what she did. The fine could have been $50 to teach a lesson, not $158.

careem says:

Cant tell if it works for works for flash speed/traffic light cameras. It will definalty not work with UK average speed cameras and most ANPR systems will not be compromised.

fedup says:

What if I take a picture the license plate of someone I don't like and then enlarge it to life size. I tape it over my plate speed past a camera and the other guy gets the ticket and has to waste a day off of work to fight the ticket.
Cameras are machines and can therefore cannot be cross examined as allowed for in our court system.

Julie says:

The spray is a scam. Doesn't work. I am a professional photographer. My brother bought the stuff and we took pictures of his plates with a flash. We did it during the did and night. No change. We emailed the seller, Shirley Timms [photoblockersprays@gmail.com], and here was here reply: "You CAN NOT test PhotoBlocker with a Regular camera.
Radar cameras do not have time to focus in on your license plate.
Regular cameras do. If it didn't work it would not be illegal in some places." That is pure bull. If the camera on the pole doesn't focus, then you wouldn't need the spray. They make NO MENTION of this on their website and the even show a before and after picture of a car. Who took that picture and with what camera? Lastly, if you use a camera and take pictures of the plate at night, with the flash, the reflective plate will block out the numbers WITHOUT the spray. The spray is ineffective!

Mike says:

I received the product yesterday and today applied the spray to my plates as per instructions. I was curious how it works so I took pictures of my car from different angles, straight on, using a flash. You can still read the plate as clear as day. I took close ups and started working my wake back to 100 feet and you can still read the plate. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

mark says:

it doesn't work!!! don't waste your money

photomaskcover says:

nothing more than a can of clearcoat! try the photomask license plate cover for the best protection available at www.photomaskcover.com

AAL says:

As an attorney, I can honestly say the law is often arbitrary and capricious in its application as well as its execution. The reasons for passing and implementing such "laws" should be suspect and based on sound research. Not being able to confront your accuser, one of the cornerstones of our constitution, has been summarily abrogated. The motivation behind the implementation of this technology is clear - revenue generation. I would suggest to anyone with an ounce of sense do what they can to protect themselves from this red herring.

G2 says:

All you guys saying its a good idea are just a bunch of butthurt little kids. You break the law you pay. You knew the law, and you chose to break it so you should pay.

"How many lives have been saved by using these traps?how does anyone know?" Are you retarded? first off, 'how does anyone know?' does not answer your question, it just misdirects it. Sounds smart to dumb people but really it makes no sense.

"why should you pay anything for going a few mph over a poxy limit you dont want their in the first place?" Because its the law retard, why do they let you breed when they know you are just populating the world with more stupid people? And do you have a license? Then you agreed to it, and its common sense that every forfeits small rights for the safety of everyone.

Just wait until its your family in the car accident then well see how you feel about it.

42,636 people died in car accidents in 2005. This is simply one step to reduce that number, im not saying it will drop that number completely but it helps. every little bit helps

Stop using "big brother" as an excuse to be reckless and endanger lives.

Photo blocker did not work for me. I got a red light ticket 3 weeks after I put the cover on.

Does Photoblocker Always Work?

Does it work all the time? Well, that depends...

It reflects the flash of the camera, so if the camera uses no flash then I don't expect that it would work very well, if at all.

The Photoblocker spray won't work against radar, only the camera flash. The radar bounces off the metal of your car, not just the licence plate. If the radar triggers the camera and the camera flashes then you're probably good. (If it reflected radar then it would probably make the radar MORE accurate.)

If this, if that...

If you blow through the radar trap at 140 and your photo is taken, with no flash, then you can expect problems.

If there's an officer behind the radar gun, then you're probably going to see the judge, at the very least.

If the officer paces you or you run through a timed trap then Photoblocker won't do you any good.

So Photoblocker is great if there's a camera flash, but useless under other circumstances. Of course, a live officer is likely to be much better calibrated than a camera. :)

Is it legal? Maybe. While several states have laws that forbid covering the plates with anything, they're vague on sprays. In either case spraying the plate will be very hard to detect.

Various companies, including photoblocker, do sell flash blocking covers for your plate, but these are frowned upon in certain areas.

Of course, you can argue that those plate covers are there to stop people from ripping off your registration tag (which does happen,) but you better be good at selling that to the cop who pulls you over.

Issues: Some people have complained about their plates yellowing after a few months. This can be a giveaway that something has been applied to that plate.

Is Photoblocker Worth It?

If you're having issues with cops pulling you over for whatever reason, then a Photoblocker spray, plate covers, or any similar item will do you no good at all.

If your area uses flash cameras then it should work very well (assuming you follow the application directions.)

If the flash cameras in your area are so poorly calibrated as to be just a scam, then I think this stuff should be required.
